KeyFob RF signal jammer

Hi All,

2 days ago when I tried to lock my car, both the KeyFob and also the door handle button did not lock my car door.

It turned out that someone close by was watching me and used a signal jammer to mess with the cars key locking mechanism.

For the experts here are some questions:

1. any ideas how many feet someone has to be away from my car to jam my keyfob signal or door handle button
2. I searched for jam device detectors on the web but did not find a good product. Any recommendation?
3. Any other cool device which can help preventing or recording people which are trying to get into the car?

Last note: I am really shocked how easy it is to get into my Camaro.

Looking forward for some great expert information!

Easy fix, 3 step process

1. buy cookie tin.
2. Eat cookies
3. Designate cookie tin as key storage

Keep few cookies in there as reward to returning keys to cookie tin every night.

No need to worry about recording codes, they are rolling, so once used, they expire. You would have to actively press the button on fob and record for that attack to work, meaning, at that point, you *already* have access to the fob.

Probably copying the code to steal at a later date. Not to "F" with you.

Buy a faraday pouch:

That sounds like someone used a Flipper device on your car. For those who don’t know what that is just google it. Some people think it’s funny and do it just for kicks.

What makes you think someone was jamming your key fob? There are a number of devices such as the electronic sensors to open store doors that can interfere with the fob. The battery in the fob might be getting weak and need to be replaced.

I don’t have any answers for your first two questions. A good dash cam might give you what you want for the third question. You might want to program the car to automatically lock the doors after they close.

When was the last time you changed your key fob battery? I had this sort of intermittent issue when my fob battery voltage was low (but not anywhere near totally discharged). I swapped it for a new one, which solved the intermittent operating issues.

4. Test it.

I have a metal key box that is just used to hang keys. I thought since it was metal it would block any signal, but when I held it lose to the car, closed, with the fob inside, I could still unlock/lock the car. So I use a dedicated faraday box and pouch.

If it's of the powder-coated / painted sort, that could be why it didn't work. There needs to be a complete "encasement" of metal that is fully conductive all around. If the door, for example, didn't make full metal-to-metal conductive contact to the main box, that could render it less-than-fully functional.

The cookie tin type thing will often work because the metal is exposed along the top ring where it will come in contact with the lid.

I'll have to test my double wall retired coffee cup for effective range and then toss in cookie tin for comparison. I dont need 100%, just reduce effective range significantly so that attack takes too long to be effective.

I love that I never have to touch my keys. My car locks itself and the button on the door unlocks it when I walk up with my keys in my pocket. I’m fortunate that I don’t live in a dangerous neighborhood. I’m also not into conspiracy’s, so I don’t need to put foil hats over me or my key fobs.
