This is absolutely a defect in material workmanship and should be a recall. It looks like the same spot on the oil pump that cracks. How many miles were on it? Did you catch it in time to save the engine?

It was addressed in a GM tech bulletin. There will be no recall because it doesn't affect safety.

A recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards.

It may not be a safety concern, however its a know defect especially for the 2017 and 2018's. many of those had to pay out of pocket , not only to replace the pump, but in a few cases a new engine.

i'm still on the fence with my 18, still under extended warranty for a two more years...I know its coming sooner or later!

I'll just leave this here again. You can Google what constitutes a recall.

Can’t there a class action lawsuit for defective equipment?

That's certainly a possibility but not sure the odds of winning since GM addressed this with dealers in a tech bulletin and should have been covered under warranty. You going to start it?

I have a 2018 ZL1 with a build date of 06/18 with 22,000 miles and with no major issues, but this whole thread has given me anxiety and stress LOL. I feel that replacing this oil pump will give me piece of mind but I am wondering if it is needed.

How many failures have been confirmed on the late 2018 builds. Based on this thread I believe I only counted maybe 3 to 4

I have the same build date as yours on my 2018. I thought there were late 2017's that we billed as 2018 early in 2018 . I too fingers crossed and under extended warranty with 28000 miles

Fingers crossed

I wouldn't feel safe with any 2017 or 2018 model no matter the build date, but that's my .02.

There was an oil pump revision in 2020 or 2021 (part number 12686434), and as far as I know that is GM's final revision to date. The conclusion from that is not pretty, but likely useful to consider if anyone has a 2017 or 2018..

Sorry to burst your bubble, but no amount of wishful thinking will ease your mind if you have a 2017 or 2018. Change out the pump if you want peace of mind.

I just heard from another member on here. He has a separate post about his pump failure.

He also had a late build 2018. He actually has the same build as mine 06/18 and his pump failed at 30k miles. So I would say that they definitely beefed up the later builds to with stand more abuse but they are still breaking but just at higher miles.

I have made the decision to replace mine. It is not worth losing a $15-20k motor and having the dam anxiety of staring at my oil pump gauge everyday as I am driving.

I would say all the later builds don't let your guard down as your miles increase. There may still be a flaw in these pumps.

There's no flaw in the later pumps from 2019+. Its almost unheard of to see a failure in those years even with higher mileage. The very very few I've seen can be chalked up to normal wear and tear or just a factory defect that could occur on any part. I would say these pumps just aren't as robust as they should have been, certainly not like a Katech pump.
