MM Catch Can and Engine Oil Smell at WOT

I just put on a Mighty Mouse Wild catch can this weekend. Took it for a drive. I can smell a noticable engine oil smell at WOT now. Not offensive to me, but noticeable.

I know it is allowing crankcase pressure to vent at high throttle, and smell comes with it. Thats the one of the purposes of the CC over the standard PCV behavior. Just didnt expect as strong of a smell. The can itself had a strong "machining oil" smell to it too, so could be just the can/filter itself.

The oil is maybe 500 miles old. Its the radiator mount version. Windows were down and sunroof was open. Didnt smell anything when i closed the windows and turned on the AC... so thinking maybe the scent/airflow just happens to waft in the open windows from that position.

Any other experiences to share on this?

Took mine off and sold it for that same reason. Not only do get that smell at WOT, but your garage will smell like oil/gas because of it being left in the catch can that vents to open air. I went with the Mighty Mouse Gen 5 pressure vent instead. It's just a breather with a built in one way valve. it's a lower profile than the Metco breather so it fits with the procharger tube.

Elite Engineering makes one that doesn't vent into the atmosphere.

Thank you for the responses. I wonder if the oil brand and type make a difference. Different brands could have stronger smells. It could also be that my engine has more blowby... but i doubt thats a real issue here. I havent got a good sampling of folks yet to know if the smell issue is common.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. I want to try a different oil to see if it makes a difference but getting a concensus on oil is tough around here.

If you're getting any detonation at all that will cause that too.

I have one. Still waiting on the car to arrive though. I’ll report back

I’ve looked at it and it just has a small rubber baffle inside the filter that will push to top of the filter under heavy throttle so it shouldn’t be all the time. I have wide open cans on my racecar on ethanol and it doesn’t even smell strong in garage. Also my turbo c5 had a wide open can. No probs or strong odors. If you ran the ac you would run it on recirculating to keep the smell out of cabin. You would think the MM design would be better for smells than both of them

I have the stock PCV system but with a Metco breather: https://metcomotorsports.com/mbr0003

I can smell a tiny bit of oil smell after multiple rev matched downshifting and stopping at a light.

I haven't noticed any smell in the garage, but it's only been 1 drive so far. Sounds like the smell under throttle is to be expected. Next time I change oil I'll try a different brand and see if it is any better. The other thread had some interesting thoughts about routing the breather cap to other locations.

Thanks all of you for your input!

After many more drives now, i can say that the smell is significantly decreased. I still occasionally notice it, but when i do it is nowhere near as strong. Thats probably 5 to 10 trips of 25 miles or so.

I dont smell anything in the garage yet either.

I purchased the m/m top with the 12 an hose connection and ran it into my air filter box. Solved my problem with odor completely
