Question about Costly Repair

Hey all!

I daily drive a 2016 Camaro 2SS that has just over 62,000 miles.

Recently I have noticed that engine oil is leaking in my driveway. After taking the car to a Chevy dealership, they let me know that the oil pan gasket is leaking. They said that while the gasket is cheap, the labor cost for repair would be just under $2,000.

Is this a fair price? I was told the engine would have to be removed from the car to access the repair.

My first thought was to use ATP AT-205 Reseal, but according to my service guy the oil pan gasket isn't rubber but instead a type of silicone liquid of types. Is this true?

Thanks in advance to any help!

That is completely out of line. You can unbolt the motor mounts, lower the cradle and raise the motor enough to get the pan off. I'm pretty sure a competent mechanic could replace the pan in a fairly leisurely 8 - 10 hours.

It would be worth your time to get another opinion either at another dealership or independent shop. Gasket technology is much better now; they usually don't just fail on their own without an underlying cause.

Repairpal.com says labor should be around $415.

Not if it's an 8-10 hour job as another poster said.

I never bothered to look to see how much would it would be to replace the pan on one of these though so not sure if that 8-10 hours is accurate.

Thank you all for the input, I most certainly will get a second opinion.

Forgive my ignorance, but what kind of underlying issue would cause the oil pan gasket to leak? The service rep at the dealership had the attitude that this was a fairly common thing to have happen over time.

Thanks again!

Modern gaskets do not normally fail on their own....examples such as physical damage to the pan itself (which would be evident) or an engine block surface not square (would have been evident early on)....improper torque of the oil pan bolts. The pan is at the bottom of the engine; gravity will cause any oil leaking above it to run down and drip off the pan. It can be difficult to pinpoint a leak....a quick glance can sometimes lead to the wrong diagnosis.

there is no gasket. they use gasket maker RTV. if it is the oil pan its leaked because the bolts were improperly torqued or sealer was improperly applied or a defective oil pan. All are manufacturers defect . 2 thousand miles over warranty. a good dealer would take care of it.

First thing I would do is get under the car use brake cleaner and get all the oil residue cleaned up. Then I would drive the car for a week and get back under and trace it down. I would not trust the dealer if they didn't take the time to clean it up, could be anything and might be a simple fix. Find it hard to believe the pan is leaking at 60k miles. I have a 2016 LGX and not a drop, 2006 GP with 130k not a drop. then again my 2005 2500HD does have a leak but its not worth doing the rear seal (major pain).

May be RMS and not pan gasket.

Start w good degreaser / power wash and once dry, corn starch the problem area - oil clings to corn starch and leaves you a nice, easy to follow trail.

I believe there was a TSB on this. There was an issue with the factory bolts not properly tightened down. Either way, looks like its about a 400-500 job. Your dealership is trying to take advantage of you becuase either they are greedy, or Incompetent. Either way, take it elsewhere...

Dealerships will always charge the most for any repair. As already stated, best to find a good shop with good reviews and get them to do the work.

Fair point on the good will repair. He could try Chevy corporate also to see if they'll help get it repaired as a good will repair.
