Let me be the one to ask the dumb question. If roughly midway between the crosshatch sections is "full", then why not make the top line there at that spot?

I did not say it was full. I said that’s where I was comfortable. When any car company gives me a range for anything, I always shoot for the middle. You may feel differently.

I learned this from a Porsche powertrain engineer in Germany.

Right, I know you did not say "full" and did not intend to imply that you did.

To rephrase, if 10 qts is the correct amount of oil for the engine, I wonder why they did not make the top mark on the dipstick be at the place where 10 quarts would be.

Had the same exact outcome. I checked the oil initially, after I changed it, it showed nearly full. I drove it a few hundred miles then one day, checked again, after it had been sitting awhile, and it was below half way on the dipstick. I added 3/4 quart then it went to the second dot (overfilled). I also noticed a puff of light smoke (not fuel) from a cold startup. So I drained the 3/4 quart back out. After my little fiasco, I'd recommend adding ten quarts and leave it be. These dipsticks are hard to read and from now on I will only use it to make sure there is oil in the pan not to determine the exact level. Ten quarts with new filter and that's it!

I don’t drive my 18 Camaro SS too much. Maybe 3k miles a year. I already had the oil changed on it twice. Right now it has 4K miles. On new engines I always change the oil early.

But now. Should I just it change once a year. Since I only put 3k miles on it in a year?

I use Mobil 1 Full synthetics and the oem oil filter.

And 10 1/4 quarts brings my oil level to the full line on the dipstick.

Forget about the Dipstick. The capacity is 10 qts. If you put in 10 and the dipstick reads low, leave it alone. Unless of course you see a puddle of oil on the floor.
You're 1/4 overfull now. Overfull is not good, especially with these engines.

I know this is an old thread, but I changed my oil, added 10 quarts being very patient to put in every drop, and it reads 1/2 quart low on the dipstick. That's weird, I would prefer that the top mark of the dipstick to be the full level. I wonder if the manual means 10 quarts without filter? They list the v6 as 5.5 quarts in my 2016 manual, but my 2011 manual lists the v6 as 6 quarts.

I have mixed thoughts about this. Certainly, it is safe to drive with the oil halfway up the dipstick. Maybe take it for a nice drive and get the oil thoroughly warmed up, come back and park it and then check the oil like 20 minutes later and see how it reads?

I'm not really that worried about it. I just wanted to let the OP know that I see the same thing on my dipstick. First car I ever owned that did this though.

Same thing happened to me today. Drained and filled with 10qts of Mobil 1 ESP 0w-40. Ran the car for about 30 seconds and let it sit for 2 hours. Checked and it was 1/2qt low. I have no idea. I don’t mind it being at half on the stick, but is that accurate is what bothers me.

Here is the perfect opportunity for the aftermarket to come out with a pretty red dipstick for our LT1 motors.
Mark the stick " This is where you need to be ".

I consider the xxxx area on my dipstick as the safe area. Mine comes up to half way in that area also on a fresh refill of 10qts.

Kinda late to the party on this, but you want it about 1/2 qt low COLD. When the oil heats up it will expand to the right level.

If you're filling it to "dipstick full" on the oil change, you're really overfilling it.

Do the "baby bottle test" to see how warm the oil is when checking level.

I did my first LT1 oil change today with my recently purchased '16 1SS. I let the oil drain 30 minutes and I always prefill my oil filters. I filled it up with ten quarts of oil on top of what little oil it took to prefill the oil filter. The dipstick still showed the oil level a tiny bit below the half way mark 30 minutes after start up. So this tells me these engines take a tad bit more than ten quarts. I know people in this thread swear up and down these engines are ten quart engines no matter what. Today's results from my experience prove otherwise.....
