I tend to reset one of my trip odometers with every refill. I’ll spare you the photos, since there are more than a few in this thread, but at 15k+ I have:
  • Best 25 - 33.8, current 24.8
  • Best 50 32.9, current 20.4
  • Best 400 - 27.8, current 19
  • Current tank - 20.1 at avg 34 mph

My suggestion to CamaroSS50 is to reset all your fuel economy meters and take a 50+ mile drive in mixed traffic, some city, some highway, some boulevard, and check in again.

I would further recommend that if you are near a Costco, pay the $60 for a membership and get gas there. If it’s like Detroit area, 93 octane Top Tier Certified goes for about $0.35 - 50 LESS than the going rate for premium in the area, so you’ll make your $60 back just in gas savings.
Thanks.

Saw quite a few of you guys fill up at Costco. I have one not too far and a member.

Have filled up once there, highest I can get in LA is 91 Octane.

I did a 24 mile trip yesterday, got 17 mpg in mixed driving (highway / street), so I feel better there isn't some underlying issue.

Brand new car, less than 1k miles on it with light driving because you are trying to break the engine in. Is the top up or down on these drives?

My opinion, quit babying the car. Drive it, now I am not saying go out and beat on it every time you turn the key on but drive it like it is intended to be driven. Just dont go out on a long road trip and set the cruise control at 65mph for 500 miles. Run the engine up thru the rev range up to and including redline. Heat cycles are what help the engine and the piston/rings break in.

As the engine gets more broke in the mileage will come up. Short drives are going to be hard on fuel mileage, the car doesnt have a chance to get into lean fuel mode on a 3 mile drive. Heck it takes over 60 seconds just for the catalytic converters to fire off and for the car to go from open loop to closed loop operation.

Also the cold PSI for the tires is 32psi I believe. Having them higher wont hurt anything and help mileage, but it could cause the center of the tires to wear out faster due to uneven wear.
Top has mostly been down.

Tires.

Well this has been baffled. I am concerned about the right front tire as it always seems to be the lowest PSI of the four.

1 tire is 38
2 are 37
1 is around 32 (right front, think there is something wrong with that tire since I drove it off the showroom floor.).

With regards to MPG, my fear is that maybe there was another issue with car (going in this week to have the top replaced, some panels replaced, etc.), but so far it sounds all normal. I hope.

FWIW, I have 3900 miles on mine now and there's a marked improvement in the 50 mile avg from 15 mpg to 18 mpg in the same commute conditions, avg speed 25 mph, hilly terrain too. Last weekend I took a 180 mile round trip journey, cruise set at 80-85 mph for about 70% of the time, and got a best of 28.2 mpg. Like some of the others have noted, the sweet spot is around 1600 rpm. You can check this for yourself if you keep an eye on the instant economy on a level road. Also, if you can get 93 octane gas, you might see still some more improvement.
Can't get 93 octane in LA.

There is a gas station not too far selling 100 octane, but the consensus around here is that is a waste (roughly $10 per gallon).

There's a gas station here selling racing fuel including 94 octane for $5+ per gal. I added half a tank of this stuff to the 91 that was already in there. Total waste of money. Nothing gained.

Its adding up to me now, I believe his MPG #'s are legit and likely not going to improve very much based on his explanations:

After seeing your Average Speed at 12 MPH and that you're in Los Angeles, its pretty apparent your trips involve HEAVY stop and go traffic. Constantly on and off the gas at low speeds will wreck a V8's fuel mileage. These cars get their best fuel mileage between 65 and 80 MPH... If you cannot MAINTAIN those speeds, forget about fuel mileage, it isn't happening...The compiled with:

91 Only Octane... ...you just have too many things working against you man. I'm sorry but 11 - 13 MPG actually sounds pretty much correct for those conditions.

Me too. I just went on a 350 mile road trip and went into boost quite a few times and I got 23.6. Mainly highway at 75-85 mph and mountain roads at 45-70 mph.

16 No option 2SS stick. My smiles per gallon number is off the chart!
Daily driver even in the snow. Approximately 35,000. approximately 16mpg lifetime but to lazy to walk out and get the exact #. 93 octane always, what price can you put on fun?

The issue is he only has an average speed of 12 MPH and is driving through Los Angeles Traffic with zero consistency for maintaining 65+ MPH for atleast 10 minutes and using only 91 Octane... this is why his fuel mileage is so low.

The whole 28 - 30+ MPG SS's are a few and in-between thing. It's overly exaggerated and leads people to believe they're supposed to be getting 30+ MPG in a 455 HP car with 8 Cylinders and built for performance. Its more like, if you get 30 MPG...great, but thats not what this car is designed for... the AVERAGE SS owner - and by average I am also including the thousands of owners that do not appear on this forum - are getting aprox 23 - 25 MPG highway. This is not an economy car.

My best was 28 and it was on completely flat terrain, noone in the car but me, 100% freeway on I-10 in Texas, A/C on and Cruise Control set to 75 MPH. On the street it plummets. Down as low as 16 MPG up to 21 MPG.

I think it's the automatics getting economy numbers near 30 mpg. I suppose 28 is good enough for me. About the same as my 1994 LT1.

You wont "see" any gains for a mix of 94/91 octane, but your car wont show any signs of detonation which is common on these engines. More so once the temps get over the 100° point during the summer months.

91 octane just doesnt have enough to curb or stop detonation on these engines. 93 really is needed, but if you have E85 in your area you can add 2-3 gallons of E85 to the mix and it will help with detonation and give you a bump in octane for minimal amount of $$$.

One of the things I found when I went supercharged from the shop that did my install is that 91 octane that has E10 in it or even 93 w/ E10 is a good thing with these engines.

I figured if raising the octane a bit by mixing 94 and 91 helps prevent detonation, the ECU should add timing, which usually means a SOTP improvement. Maybe these GDI engines are tuned differently.

I can get E85 from the same gas station but all the warnings about ethanol doing horrible things to the fuel system have kept me away from it.
