And in the end, they have a point. It is a marketing stunt for sure. The problem is, it's a marketing stunt that could very well happen in the real world, maybe not cinder blocks dropped from 5 feet into the truck bed, but the tool box being thrown in is. I'm curious if it actually has happened in real life...

I could see GM doing steel in the bed that's welded to aluminum either higher up on the sides of the bed or to the rear 3/4 panels.

Aluminum is definitely the future for GM trucks and they will need the spin team in full effect once they roll out aluminum GM trucks. However, Ford has been running the "military grade" bullshit for their aluminum, trying to make it sound like its some super strong alloy. Military grade is meaningless when you don't take into account what the military was using the aluminum for. The M16 uses aluminum receivers, but the parts that take all the stress are still steel.
I pray to whatever deity is listening that GM uses a steel bed, for at least the floor and walls.

Tanks typically don't, but vehicles that aren't expected to stop HEAT (high explosive anti-tank) or depleted uranium sabot penetrators (IE main battle tanks and some heavy IFV's) do use thick aluminum plates for armor. Example being the latest up-armor kits for hummers use half-inch high strength aluminum. it's also used for some structural elements in ships such as frigates and destroyers where weight and top-heavy characteristics are of concern.

The M551 Sheridan used aluminum armor, but it's hardly a tank. The vehicle they showed looked like an M2/3 Bradley, which doesn't use aluminum armor. It uses layered composite armor. Their may be aluminum in it but it's not entirely aluminum.

Shooting missiles from the gun on the other hand ... ? Why not just stick a couple launchers on the outside of the turret, similar to what ended up happening on the Bradley? Seems like that would have been a much better solution to give the tank some anti-armour punch. Anyway, it was still a tank. A light tank, sure. But a tank none the less. It just put a lot more emphasis on the mobility part of the tank design triangle (firepower, protection, and mobility). But thats just the nature of a light tank.

Express/Savana cutaway production outsourced to Navistar to free up production capacity for midsize trucks at Wentzville.
