Opinions on Titanium brake shims ??

I have a set of Girodisc titanium brake pad shims. I understand that
they help block the heat from going into the Calipers and pistons. Seems
like a good idea when using track pads, but what about the OEM pads or
something mild like Ferrodo DS2500? It seems blocking the heat from the caliper would keep more heat in the pads, and that may cause them
to overheat sooner.

Opinions?

OEM pads already come with a Fiber Shims so you do not need to add a Ti shim.

If you wanted to stack them you could but for street pads one shim is plenty.

The stock shims are some kind of fiber/composite coated steel.

I’ve run OE pads and DS2500 with the stock shims. Hard to say where the stock shims stand in comparison to Ti as far as heat transfer without knowing what the stock shims are coated with.

My personal opinion would be to run Ti shims with anything more aggressive than OE. GM validates the stock setup (including thermal), but that doesn't guarantee that the system will be OK with additional heat (not that it will fail, just the chances are higher the more heat there is). I wouldn't expect the Ti shims to cause the pads to be excessively hotter either, but if I have a choice of brake thermal failure mode I'd take pads overheating before boiling fluid or frying piston seals.

I couldn't be happier with my Ti Shims..I have been using those and brake deflectors ..my previous caliper temps dropped significantly with those two (350F vs 450F previously) ..R comp tires and Raybestos ST47 F/ST45 R pads here.

I would never ever use my caliper, and piston side as a heat sink to save a pad or rotor since most of the brake fluids have a wet boiling point at around 400F degrees.. and I didn't notice any abnormal wear on the pads and rotors, in fact they seemed they look better than before as I'm not dealing with brake fades and burnish rotors by applying excessive brakes (because of the lack of initial bite)

Lots of great info, thanks!

I think I will give them a try with the oem pads.

I would assume referring to the kit that comes with the SS, PN 84433357. <$30 shipped from multiple dealers online and will fit the SS 1LE, ZL1, and possibly even ZL1 1LE (might require some trimming for wheel clearance though).

This is as good a place as any for this debate, right?

So, part of the calipers job is to act as a heat sink, right? By using a Ti shim, all of the generated heat is still there, it's just 'stuck' in the pad and rotor.

Has anyone noticed if the presence of the shim increases rotor wear or leads to pad fade vs fluid fade?

I have a set for my 1LE, but I have only used them once at VIR.

Also as far as using a shim goes - what about just reusing the OEM one on non OEM track pads? its probably better than not using one?

I wouldn't bother with shims for OEM pads as it already comes with some insulation ..
