With all the new hype around the 2019's shipping with factory filled 0w-40 mobil 1 esp oil, I asked my dealer if they planned on changing over all 2014+ LT1 & LT4 equipped vehicles. My service writers, service manager, and parts manager all told me the same thing:

"There is no memo/bulletin/instructions from chevy saying pre-2019 models require the new oil and thus we arr not recomending that you switch and as such any warranty claims will not be covered"

I called 2 other local chevy dealers and got a similar answer. They have no issues selling me the oil but are waiting on GM to give them something in writing saying it is "required" before they change over.

I have not seen anything official from chevy on this and only see the literature about 2019s and how it can be used on earlier models but no dealer specific official letter.

What is everyones thoughts on this?

**(This is not a discussion about the oil it self. vs 5w-30 but the dealer response / gm response. )**

My thoughts are these oils are pretty close to begin with, particularly if we are talking M1 products for both weights. I would not expect the service dept of any dealership to have anything near the depth of knowledge on this topic one can easily find online.

As long as 5w30 synthetic oil is available I will use it in my 2016 SS. I use Dexos approved Valvoline and won’t switch to the new oil.

Page 204 of the 2017 owners manual states that the oil in the LT1 should be changed to 0W40 Dexos 2 if the car is used on the track. In the Ask Al section of this forum the Chevy Camaro Chief Engineer states the gen6 LT1 is "good to go" with the 0W40 so if you track the car use 0W40. If not use 5W30. Hope this answers your question.

I am actually looking for an official correspondance from corporate general motors or chevrolet stating to dealers that the new oil is OK for all 2014 and newer LT1 & LT4 equipped camaro and corvettes and that it will NOT void the warranty and is the prefered oil moving forward.

Without that my dealer said if my motor grenaded and i had the 0w-40 my powertrain warranty is VOIDED because the new oil is only made for the 2019 and up vehicles...

Total rubish, I know, But i am trying to play them at their own game... so anything short of what i said above directly from corporate no dealer near me will fill my vehicle with the new approved oil.

Not long ago I read an article which said the the oil requirements that the car manufacturer are giving are the min. requirements and that you are allowed to fill any brand in your engine as long as you fulfill the minimum requirements. Better oil is always allowed but not mandatory.

When I had the run-in sevice at 900miles, my dealer switched to Mobil 1 0W-40. I plan to only use that oil in the future.

Why bother using the 0w40 when the 5w30 is working fine for you?

I understand you are asking about normal every day usage the manual does state that 0w40 is the preferred oil if you track your car, and the Camaro SS/ZL1/1LE is one that is covered under factory warranty while tracking.

Is there some magic secret sauce in that M1 ESP 0w40 that has you wanting to use it?

0w40 and ESP 0w40 are different.

To understand why the dealer is not approving the use of 0w40 oil you have to understand how warranty claims between the dealer and GM work to begin with.

I will start by saying, this is a GM issue and not a dealer issue.

For a dealer to perform and be paid for warranty work, they have to submit the repair order, diagnostics and cause of failure to GM. If GM determines that the cause of failure is not a warranty related matter or in this case oil different in weight than manufacturer recommended is used, GM retains the right to deny funding the repair which means the dealer will not get paid for parts, material, and labor. In this instance the weight of the oil used (0w40) is irrelevant .. even though in technality it shouldn't do any harm, on legalistic terms it's no different than using non SAE oil or 20w50 ...They need something in 'writing' because if they go with their gut telling you 'sure put 0w40 in it should be no problem' and later on you have an engine failure non related to the oil, and GM investigates the failure and find you were using 0w40 even though it didnt cause the problem ... that dealer risks not being paid for the repair as GM can still come back and say the owner was using oil not recommended for the specific make and model.

You have to realize and accept, Dealers and GM operate as a business, not as enthusiasts.

Why can't some of you get it thru your head. Today's engines are designed for a specfic oil. That is inscribed on you cap. Bearing clearances and engine operation depends on it. This is not the 60's use what you want.......

So if I use the recommended ACDelco Dexos1 Engine Oil 5w30 like the oil cap says; but use a different brand with the same 5w30 will this void warranty?
