Is my weak start up linked to my battery - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

In the morning or after a 12 hour day at work, my camaro has a weak start up. It starts perfectly after I drive it and stop for something and get back in it. I'm thinking it could be time for a new batter. Car was built May of 2012.

Seems likely. Auto zone will test the battery for you.

Agree that your battery is probably getting on in years, and likely needs replacement. You can have it tested, but 3-5 years, even when using a battery tender religiously, is sometimes stretching it. I think the OEM Delco is fine, and if it lasted you 5-6 years, then I guess that's further proof. As with many items for our cars and others, there are many good choices out there. Do a little internet and forum searching, and you'll read many recommendations.

Whatever you choose, make sure to check the date sticker on the battery to make sure you're getting the freshest battery they have. The ones at the front of the display are often up to a year old.....no bueno. I never buy a battery that is older than 2-3 months or less.

I would look into getting a AGM type battery. It stands for

ABSORBENT GLASS MATT

It is a lead acid battery, but you never have to add water to it.

Also make sure to charge the new battery till it is completely charged before starting it for the first time.

Iam still on the original battery, I know Iam stretching it but still starts nice all the time. No weak starts at all. Been sitting since Tuesday, so we will see how it starts after this snow storm.

It's a good battery. Mine gave out after six years. Build date Sept '09 + however old the battery was.

I went with a Braille battery and works great.

Thanks for the tip. Isn't the braille battery light? Does it bolt up in the original battery allotted spot?

Yeah they're much lighter than stock. I went with the 21 pound (OEM is like 44lb).

You have to put some soft foam to raise it up and on its sides to make it work. Not hard At all but you just don't want it moving around and such.

Cranks fine. Drive it once or twice a week and no problems. No trickle charger either. I wouldn't go below the 17 or 21 pound Braille battery. As it may require a trickle charger.

Keep in the mind that the smaller batteries have lower reserve charge as well. So don't think that you can sit in a drive-in theater and watch two shows without worrying.

LOL drive-in theater. Not many of them left. It would be a 3 hour drive for me. So no worry their.
