More Cam questions

Mostly a noob here but I am looking into learning more about cams and how to know what I am choosing. I have a 12 Camaro SS LS3 that is a my DD with a CAI and a Corsa exhaust with plans in another week or two to go with the Kooks stepped headers. I have been searching around the internet and mainly around Camaro5 and have read so many different threads on cams. I am still trying to learn everything I can about how to "pick" a cam and what the different xxx/xxx duration and xxx/xxx lift means in regards to choosing one that will fit my application. I have heard the terms low-mid range and mid-high range thrown around a bit. At what point does it become a drive ability issue? Also, I am assuming that choosing a cam will change the exhaust note around right? In talking with one of my buddies on here, I believe I came up with maybe something mid-high with a deep exhaust note???

Oh yea, and one more thing, after I get the cam figured out and installed, the day WILL come that I put on a SLP TVS2300, but only in time. Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to call a few vendors, see who fits you best, and let them decide for you. We do this work day in and day out, and whether or not we stay in business depends on our results, so we are driven to build the best cars possible!

You're not very far from us at all, we have a lot of folks come down from your area. We've got a great cam, the '545' cam, that is perfect for naturally aspirated cars and also for forced induction down the road. That's the path that a LOT of folks take - they do the bolt ons, add a cam, maybe some heads, and then when they get bored with that they add a blower. It's convenient if the cam you have is a good match for the blower, that way you aren't holding back on power later or taking the time to swap it again.

Naturally aspirated, the '545' cam does about 470-480rwhp with bolt ons, and right at 500rwhp with heads. With a blower, really the sky is the limit. I have the '545' in my own car and laid down 698rwhp on 10 lbs of boost. The driveability is excellent, and it has that great lope to it also...which most of us are after!

Check out a few of our build blogs with this cam to get an idea -

LS3 w/ 545 cam

LS3 w/ 545 cam & heads

LS3 w/ 545 cam, heads, and TVS 2300

This gives you an idea of the sound:

You may want to contact Pat G. He can spec a custom cam designed for your Camaro and specific mods.

That 545 cam looks like it would be a nice driving cam.

You can get cams specd and Tailored to your wants and current and future needs. I personally like the NF cam, and can also be used in FI apps. From what I've read and witnessed personally it drives good, makes good power. But if I wanted a custom cam I'd call Brian Tooley racing or Ed Curtis to spec me a cam.

You'll also need supporting mods and those are

- trunion upgrade
- Brian Tooley racing dual platinum springs that have a "0" failure rate.
- chromoly pushrods
- melling 10296 pump
- c5r timing chain, stay away from the dbl rollers, you'll need the timing cover ground down for clearance issues.

And have lots and lots of headaches with the dbl roller clearance issues lol

Yea litle, I have seen many of your posts in regards to the supporting mods, which I actually have written down here to go with the cam. Which has helped out a lot btw. My other question for you guys is, will I have to wait to put the new cam in to measure for push rods or just purchase whats recommended? Like I said its my only vehicle at the moment and if I do have to leave it torn apart to properly measure the rods I would need to borrow my buddy's ride or something while waiting for the new rods to go in.

It is recommended you wait because every engine is similar but not the same thankfully my pushrods actually fitted when I ordered mine prior to tearing apart but that's a chance I took because of lack of research. I am now more knowledgeable and I realize research is of extreme importance, and in order to do things right the first time it is an essential step! Good luck and happy modding: thumbsup:

If you go with the NF (for example) they'll tell you what size they recommend AS LONG as you don't mill the heads and you won't need to measure.
