However, this did pique my interest and make me recheck my documentation. In my case there were actually 2 orders (those yellow sales agreements, not the order workbench printout): a preliminary one written up on the day I placed the order that doesn't have all the fields completed, and a final one that contains everything, including the trade-in value at the date of delivery.

Now, here's what's interesting, I can't find any clause that would bind the dealer to honor the preliminary sales price... mine did, and in fact they also honored our verbal agreement about the trade-in 7 weeks prior to delivery, but reading through the order, it seems legally possible that they decide not to sell you the car eventually, or change the sales price and if you don't like it, they can simply refund your cash deposit, if any, and let you walk out without the car. Absolutely disgraceful, but doesn't seem to be illegal.

Becky, can you or someone else from a Chevy dealership confirm what the actual state of affairs is? It would be super helpful to all of us, if only for future reference.

Just to clarify. I had a price for the car and a price for my trade-in. The car was no big deal because they list the price right on their website. The problem was with the trade_in. After they appraised my truck, the sales guy gave me a number, 42K. They wanted me to put down a deposit but before I did, I wanted a guarantee about the trade-in value. The sales manager put in writing that the trade-in would be no less than 40.5k, which I understand because I could run the crap out of it in the 2 months before delivery. I went in to pick up the car last week and he accused me of switching trade-ins. Said I brought in a Dodge Charger and was trying to pull a fast one on him. Basically called me a liar 3 times. He proceeded to say he would only give me 35.5k for my truck. After a few choice words I walked out. Yesterday, they actually had the audacity to send me pictures of the car sitting in their showroom asking if I would reconsider. Seriously? Could I do something legally? Not sure but not worth my time. Oh and by the way, their system was down the day I ordered so they never charged me the 1K deposit.
I am in the process of working with another local dealer who I have bought from before to see if she can do anything.

Unfortunately, unless you can prove that they have appraised the right car, it won't be worth the effort.

Not trying to excuse them, but what if they made an error when discussing about your car? Imagine your seller told the guy who makes the appraisal that it was a charger and not a truck (stupid people do existing!).

I think you made the right think by walking out. Just go somewhere else, maybe with Becky!!
