Mustang to 1LE
Long time lurker and have had my eye on a 1LE SS since they debuted. I have a 2013 Mustang GT with full suspension and a sticky tire. Car handles well very neutral on a road course and autocross.
I wanted to hear from some old S197 Mustang owners who tracked their cars. Is the 1LE that much better and worth spending 15k to get into for example? Appreciate it and thinking may be able to get a good deal on a new one. |

I had a s197 GT and a 15 GT. Yup it's worth it. The cars corners like a missile. It's point and shoot with a mean v8. This is IMO. The mustang is still softer and not has "hardcore" but makes up for it a little better daily driver ( storage space etc.)
The magnetic suspension and make it a highway cruiser or a track machine I love it. |

That was my mistake, drove one and couldn't stop thinking about how great it felt and how well it went around a curve. Had to get one. The only Mustang I ever drove was the family's '68, but a friend at work has a '05 and a '13 and he was really impressed with the 1LE.

Traded my 2014 Mustang GT track pack car on a 2015 Mustang GT performance pack. The 2015 was noticeably better on track. Traded it on a 2017 Camaro SS 6 speed. The Camaro had a much better chassis and transmission and was MUCH better on track. I kept it 3 years and just bought a 2020 Camaro SS 1LE. It's in another league and can't wait to get on track!

Thanks for feedback all! Curious to see if incentives get really strong in near term. Driving one sounds like a good and bad idea haha.

I believe you get 3750 off on a 19 and 3250 off on a 2020 right now as a current mustang owner. Once you drive one you will own one if its in the cards financially. I have a 2018 zl1 1le and a 2018 ss 1le. They are awesome machines in the corners.

I had a 2012 GT that was an autox STU/STP setup. I was pretty happy with the car and had zero intentions of getting rid of it. The 2016 Camaro came out, I liked what GM did with the 6th gen, drove a GM friends SS A8 test car and I was blown away. Test drove a SS M6 and was hooked. It was as competent as my modified Mustang, but was stock and had a track warranty. So, I found a good deal and jumped ship to the Camaro. After a year, I got the bug to modify the car, but really didn’t want to get into that hole. Ended up finding a used 1LE in the color I wanted and was simply blown away from the test drive how different that car felt of the normal SS.
The SS 1LE is literally THE from-the-dealership track performance car bargain. For the money, there really isn’t much out there better. |

I had a 2013 Boss 302.. I REALLY liked the 13 Boss 302. Friend bought a 2019 SS 1LE and after seeing it it on track at VIR, I was sold! Bought my own Garnett Red SS 1LE a month later and I haven’t looked back. So much better than the Boss 302. Like some one else said earlier, these 6th Gen Camaro’s on the Alpha chassis are on a ‘whole nuther level’! If you don’t have the $$ to buy one... don’t test drive one.. it’ll be an expensive test drive..

Sold my 15 GT pp after my experience in the 1LE.
285/35 /20 & 305/35/20s on forged wheels plus quite a bit of BMR Upgrades. Also I didn't trust the Getrig pos tranny even after several fluid changes. Howled like a gear drive Last edited by Paulie-G; 04-06-2020 at 03:07 PM. |

A buddy of mine with a 17 Mustang GT has a 305 square set up with a bunch of suspension work took my car for a ride a few weeks ago. He came back about 10 minutes later, dropped his head & said “I think yours is better than mine”. This was the same day he text me saying how awesome his car felt after doing that work to it. He’s a Mustang guy through & through so I know that was difficult for him to admit. Lol

I had an S550/15 GT/PP1 with about a grand in Steeda parts under the rear and this 1LE is still a way better chassis. the Torque down low in the RPM range is something that I absolutely love.

I had a 2011 5.0 in my early days of autox. Traded it in on a Focus ST, and traded that in on the Camaro. I've gotten one event in so far in the Camaro and can say for certain the chassis is better than any S197 Mustang. I'd even say it's better than the S550, though I don't have any performance driving experience in those.
If you're going to frequently track the car, 1LE is likely worth it because of all the extra cooling bits. If it's going to be a once or twice a year thing, I'm not certain it's necessary. Both the SS and 1LE come with the track warranty, I know someone with an SS who's had their engine replaced with their numbers still on the side of the car. The extra speed from the 1LE is mostly from the tires, and if you track often then you're likely changing wheels and tires anyway.

I tracked my 17 Camaro SS twice in 3 years and I can say I'm thrilled with the new 1SS 1LE for daily driving and can't wait to feel the difference on track. I know a lot of people have different opinions when it comes to Mustang VS Camaro, but many of us have owned both and haven't looked back after just one test drive in a 2016-up Camaro.
I look for reasons to drive down the backroads during this "pandemic" just to kill time and enjoy this car. I didn't do any modding on my 17 until late last fall. 50 whp additional on these cars makes a huge difference.
