Big brake upgrade

Hi guys,

I own a Gen 6 SS and would like to upgrade the brakes.

Do somebody know if the ZL1 brakes will fit these aftermarket 20“ wheels?
Aftermarket: 20 x 9.5 offset 22
20 x 11 offset 40
Name: Wheelforce CF2 Flow forged

And these stock wheels attached?

Or do I have to mount the SS 1LE brakes?

The ZL1.LE brakes fit under most 18/19/20" wheels. If you buy the kit it will come with calipers, rotors, pads, lines and dust shield. You only need to do the fronts as the rears are the same.
I just installed the GM kit on the front last night and it was a very quick and easy install.

Afaik there's only a kit available which is the same dimensions as the SS 1LE, not the ZL1 (1LE).
The rears on the ZL1 are the same as the normal SS? I thought they're also bigger.
SS 1LE does have the same rears as normal SS.

I know that the SS 1LE brakes should fit without a problem. But what about the ZL1 (1LE) brakes?

Physically I think they are the same size.

Nah, the ZL1 1LE (with J6H brakes) has even larger rotors and calipers than the SS 1LE (with its J6M brakes), both front and rear, see below. The differences are not huge, but not negligible either.

But the front ZL1 calipers are the same size as the SS 1LE calipers?
Also the rear ZL1 calipers are the same size as the SS/SS 1LE calipers?

This means that the max wheel offset is the same as the SS 1LE...

Then I don't know why a guy with a shop told me to buy "his" brakes, because the ZL1 won't fit.
I searched his online shop and he's selling the gm performance brakes which are equally to the SS 1LE.

Where do you get the information that the calipers are different in size? I can't read it from that.

This means that the max wheel offset is the same as the SS 1LE... The regular ZL1 has the same wheel size and offset as the SS 1LE

Where do you get the information that the calipers are different in size? I can't read it from that. You'll just have to believe those of us who have said that's true. Short of looking up part #s or you laying your hands on them to see for yourself, it is well known that the calipers are different sizes.
To add to your confusion, the 2022 and up Camaro SS 1LE, ZL1 and ZL1 1LE are available with the copper free brake packages which are even bigger than the normal ZL1 brakes. So make sure you stay away from those

It is possible the bigger ZL1 calipers might have a clearance issue to your wheels, but you could run a small wheel spacer to pop the wheels away.

Thanks for these info.
Unfortunately you’re not allowed in Germany to let the wheels stick outside the chassis. When I would install a spacer on my aftermarket wheels the offset would be too high and the wheels would stick out of the wheel housing.

Your wheel and tire combo already sits inside the fender more than the wider SS 1LE wheel and tire package would, so if you added that extra 3mm or so by way of a spacer it would not stick out past the fender.

Indeed this table in the service manual only enumerates rotor specs.

Nevertheless, ZL1 1LE calipers have different part numbers and fitment information from the SS 1LE (part numbers 84229190/84229191 vs 84063672/84063673, feel free to check online catalogs at parts sites).

I'm no brake expert by any means, but it makes sense, too, given that ZL1 1LE rotors are 20mm wider, thus reusing the same calipers and pads from the SS 1LE would mean having the same friction surface against a larger rotor, reducing braking efficiency gains that the ZL1 1LE's super grippy tires afford.

I think I'll go with the SS 1LE then and open a wtb thread. Maybe someone is selling their brakes.
Thank you guys.
