GoPro vs Dash Cam
Need help on deciding whether to buy a GoPro or a Dash Cam.
My main purpose is to record a 2 - 4 hour drive and be able to save it all. Never used either. Appreciate any input you have on this, Thanks Last edited by Matt18C; 04-04-2019 at 07:29 PM. |

Dash cam.
You can leave it in the car forever and record everything every day. Not just your trip. It's a great help if you are in an accident and depending on the model it can record events when you aren't in the car. |

My dash cam (Thinkware F800) can record about 8 hours worth before it starts overwriting.
Yes, there is a button that will dump 40 seconds of video starting 20 seconds prior to the press, but that's only needed if you see something interesting you want to save (like when I witnessed an accident). If you get into an accident yourself, it does that for you automatically. These videos are treated as "incident" recordings and are saved to a different partition on the SD card, and don't get overwritten. A GoPro records until it's full and then just stops. The parking mode/motion detection is great for when you aren't in the vehicle. Someone backs into your car in the parking lot and doesn't leave a note? You got it on dashcam. Not on a GoPro. Take a look at Thinkware and Blackvue dashcams. The tech is pretty amazing. I have Thinkware F800's in both of my cars. Front facing in the Camaro since there's no place to install a rear camera in a convertible. Front and Rear camera's in the Highlander. I don't know how much a good GoPro costs so maybe there is a cost benefit to getting one instead of a dashcam. Obviously you can take the GoPro out of the car and use it for other things. Maybe that appeals to you. To me, the benefits of a dashcam made it a no-brainer. |

You will still want a dash cam. Get one that can easily record your 4+ hours of driving before overwriting saves. Depending on the quality your trying to get out of this, a dash cam may even be cheaper. Also I have a Hero 5 and even a 32gb SD card isnt a whole lot of space for it if your trying to get good quality. (Audio isnt great)
On top of me owning that GoPro, I still plan on buying a dash cam as soon as I get my car in and measure the space. Probably going to go with the $70 AUKEY option. But im still researching.

Dash cam by far. I have and use both the GoPro and several dash cams. You can use 128 G Byte micro SD cards which will hold hours and hours of video. If you travel and want to be sure to keep important videos, take you laptop and download the pics at intervals. You can buy several MicroSD cards and change them out at intervals and you can save days of travel videos that way.
The GoPro is great if you buy the extra Bluetooth units where you can operate them using a remote fob or your smartphone, but the GoPros use lots of space on the storage of the unit. They have some advantages as well as in, you can attach a GoPro to almost any part of your car and take very interesting videos. I have VioFo dash cams in two of my vehicles including my Camaro and they are awesomely great and both are GPS units so you can determine where and how fast you were traveling. They both have G sensors so that it will automatically record in the event of a parking lot mishap when you're not in the car. One has two cameras one recording forward and the other to the rear. Great for drag strip videos. You would enjoy either one, but I think the dashcam is a better choice.

dashcam, thinkware has sales almost every month. fa200 or f800 2chan are both solid options. 2chan=front and rear cam.

I have both. My dashcam keeps days worth of driving and cuts them in 10 min intervals. Go Pro is great quality but dies super quick. Dash cam is always connected to the vehicle. It can also have hit detection and record while parked
