Deleting primary cats on the SS!? Thoughts

So I will be doing some bolt ons to the SS . Such as flex fuel tune and intake. A friend of mine recommended me to delete my primary cats and of course tunning the car after ! Do you all recommend for me to do this. Anyone have this done? Is it worth it etc

Only if you don't plan on driving on public roads, anyway that probably qualifies for the
death penalty in CA.

You'll be converting it into an assault car with high capacity gas tank... Which I believe is death penalty in CA like Warrior stated above.

In all seriousness, if you want to stick to being legal in any state, deleting the primary cats is a federal offense. I wouldn't recommend it. If anything, go with a high flow catalytic converter to replace the factory ones. Kooks has a good Header / Cat package.

This is the key question. I would bet with most mods the stock cats flow well enough that you don't need to worry.

Cats only cost you 5 or 6 HP on the dyno, tops. High flow cats less than that. The only time I would consider removing primary cats is if I was adding long tube headers on a super charged engine, even then that is probably being over cautious given the quality of some of the green cats such as those sold by Kooks. If it were me I would keep the cats and avoid the inspection issues you would face in California.

Is it worth it? You bet!!!! All the little things add up in total HP gains.

Depends where you want to go and finish up with mods. If I was in California I would still mod my exhaust with headers, no cats, 3 inch stainless steel pipes.(plus get rid of AFM/NPP) If I got pulled over and ticket I would just put my cats back on before seeing the inspection. Pay the fine and keep the inspection letter for later pull overs. On a side note you guys in California are getting targeted by liberal loving leftists that actually believe we should pay people $12K a year not to go to work.

California has roving or roaming smog check stations, You’re driving down the road and you’ll see a bunch of orange cones it’s set up like a DUI check point. I’ve went through many living in California. CHP is there they waive you in , they mostly pick on older vehicles and performance vehicles of course anything that looks modified is suspect. They do a smog check and visual inspection right there. They have a trailer with full Dyno. If you’ve removed your catalytic converter’s or any smog equipment you will not be driving your car from that location. Period. Also California passed a law that is in full effect now regarding the sound or loudness of the exhaust that gives probable cause to pull you over and check for missing emissions as well. We still have fix it tickets in California but it’s a gray area with the emissions equipment they can issue a fix-it ticket or they can impound your car. The CHP use that at the local street races if they roll up on the screen that’s what they start looking for now and it’s big big money.
So in conclusion you make it sound pretty easy to get around no big deal but You do not live in California, in reality you’re really gambling here in California.
The last check I went through was told Diesel trucks are a big new target.

removing the cats is up to a $10k fine. if you aren't in a smog state, it's not illegal to have a vehicle with the cats removed, only the act of actually removing them is illegal.

If you were in a different state I would say Yes it's worth it with a tune. It's not just the cats that restrict power, its the neck down area before the flange on the cat pipes. You will see 10-15whp gain and a good increase in sound without drone if you keep the secondary cats in place.
