Removing trim around Steering Wheel Controls

Did a bit of searching, could not find an answer...

So, how do you remove the “chrome” trim around the steering wheel controls of a 2018 2SS vert?

I want to paint/dip/wrap these trim bits, along with the trim around the instrument cluster and the shifter bezel.

Thanks much!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I just was at the decal place yesterday and asked the same question,

there is a video on another thread that shows it being taken apart can’t post on the iPad but it is there

the door handles need to be done for me as well and the vents on each side

going to be fun. do the vents and door handles come off easy?

Here is a video from another post, don't know if it will help but it's worth a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=Z8vJSsa2ghA

Thanks for the info.

So the airbag has to come out, then the side modules.

Then looks likes carefully lifting the side tabs on the trim.

Hmmm. Need to decide if worth it.

Just installed Red Paddle Shifters, so have some experience here...
Yes, made me nervous messing with the Air Bag...

Watch the video referenced in thread.

Disconnect the battery.

Pull the airbag fuse.

I used long Allen wrenches to stick in the little holes on each side of steering wheel. Like the vid, it takes a bit of messing to get the airbag out. I did one side at a time. I didn't feel like un-doing the airbag connectors, so i just zip-tied it to top of steering wheel to help hold out of way.

Pull the little plastic emblem out at bottom of steering wheel. Friction fit so just pull.

I didn't figure this out from the vid til 1/2 done, but makes real easy to get the trim pieces out...There is a plastic ring that goes all the way around the inside of the wheel that holds the right and left clusters in. Doesn't look like it does, but does. Friction so just pull. Get this out and they come out easy. You can then pull the chrome bezels off much easier.

Looks daunting but not too bad.

Hope helps.
Jim

Thanks Jim!

Car is a 2018 2SS Convertible. Mosaic Black Metallic/Kalahari interior.

I have some Anthracite and Black Sapphire Plasti-Dip, as well as a spray can of AC Delco MBM paint. Want to do the “chrome” trim around the gauge cluster, the trim on the steering wheel, and the trim around the shifter.

Will likely start with the Plasti-Dip and some Glossifier, so I can peel it if I screw up/hate it.

Just need a day off without the kids running wild to do it. Maybe next weekend...

Not really, you don't want a mod that doesn't look right and anytime you coat something. You're not going to want other components exposed, so you'd have to mask off the entire inside of your car which isn't practical.

So I just did the removal and wow was that a pain in the butt. I painted my with a blue anodized auto paint.
Anyone know if that circle part can be preyed off so I can paint that as well?

i put some "carbon" pieces over the stock, they used 3M to apply. They looked great, but i couldn't stand the sharp edge at the top so i pulled them off.

All of these parts are real carbon parts from trufiber.. they do have cover w dbl sided tape as well but this is the way to go!

I plan on making a thread to carbon my wheel.

I agree wholeheartedly. Should I ever decide to reach for more carbon fiber in the interior, I'll want actual, quality replacement parts and not some stick-up covers with 3M tape. If I can't afford or justify the real parts, I simply won't buy anything.
