GY Supercar 3R or Toyo R888R

Goodyear shows 285/30/20 and 305/30/20 as available sizes for the 3R. Tire Rack expects Goodyear to start producing these sizes in the fall. What would you choose, the 3Rs or Toyo R888Rs for a combo track/street tire? With emphasis more towards track. Based on current pricing, although 19s versus 20s, it seems that the 3Rs will be less expensive. I am also assuming the 315/30/20 R888R will fit the ZL1 with no problems.

Would love to try out the R888r's. If they are anything like the NT01's they are phenomenal. Have heard the 3R's don't last for crap.

The normal SC3's are as you describe. The 3R that the OP was asking about is definitely a track tire first.

OP you will get much better life out of the R888Rs, but I believe the 3R's will be a bit faster tire. I'm running the R888R's as my track tires currently (in 18's) and I don't know if I could deal with the noise on a daily basis. They are a very LOUD tire.

Yeah, the OE 20's really limit tire options. 19's are the way to go, tons of options.

If you're conisdering more track-biased tires to fit OE wheels, you should probably put Sport Cup 2's in the running too... just saying. Not much more $ ($20-30 per tire) than the R888R's. You could also run 295/325 if you were feeling really gutsy.

in the prior track car I ran Sport Cups for a few years. They wear like iron. Ran 1 set of the R888s. Liked them both. The Cups and R888s seemed pretty equivalent. Of course ran both on a car that is 600 lbs lighter than the ZL1. Both were about 3 sec a lap slower for me than Pirelli slicks at RA. Just curious how the stack up to the presumably lower cost GY 3R.

Yeah, I'd expect similar results on the ZL1. The 3R sits squarely in the middle between an NT01/R888R/PSC2 and a slick pace-wise. They offer great grip, and don't fall off much on 20 minute sessions, however... they wear faster than any tire I've ever driven, like most guys say 8 Heat Cycles and the fonts cord... about what I experienced. I don't care if the 3R's are 1/2 the cost, if you have to replace them 4x as often... it isn't advantageous financially.

Given the wear on the 3s I think when the 3s go I'll give the R888Rs a try and see how i like them on this car.
