"Sound Tube Mod" MUST TRY!!! FREE MOD!!!
First off all credit for this mod goes to "NBR IPD" he posted a thread with the below pictures in the 1LE section. I figured it needed to be shared with all the other LT1 owners since it applies to all LT1 cars.
This is a super easy modification that takes 30 seconds, and can be reversed just as easily if you don't like the sound. I'm a pretty picky guy and I found that the induction noise this amplifies is a huge improvement and honest to god makes the car sound like it has a CAI installed. For those of you who have never put a CAI on a car please don't mistake induction noise as an air whooshing sound. The induction noise is the deep bellow/growl you hear on heavy throttle application. I would be shocked if this mod doesn't catch on and become bigger than the typical fuse pull mod. Now to the good stuff. Below are the photos posted in the other thread that very clearly show where to open up the sound tube and remove the foam insert that dampens the induction noise. Squeeze the collar on the sided to help the tabs on the top and bottom disconnect. Once you open up the tube reach in with a small set of pliers or even a flat head screw driver and pull the foam damper out. After that simply snap the tube back together and go for a drive. If you still have your NPP fuse in you can actually put the car in stealth mode so you can then distinguish which noise is coming from the sound tube. Even without the car in stealth mode the sound difference is very noticeable and if you didn't know better you would think the exhaust had been modified. Try it out and post back with your opinions.

I assume that there is a diaphragm upstream from this that keeps the actual intake air separated from the air in the soundtube right? I think most are designed that way. I'd like to know that before I pull the only thing possibly separating the intake air from coming into the cabin instead of the engine.

To your question, you could quickly take the diaphragm housing off and inspect for yourself if you disconnect the part with the foam. There are two torx that secure it to the block. I recall there are three plastic torx screws that open the diaphragm. Not good for contraceptive use. The more I think about this, diaphragms, foam, plastic tubing fit to run electrical wiring, a 1/2" hole in the firewall, the more ridiculous this entire thing gets. |

You're good. Actually a mod should probably merge our threads and delete my original post since you posted the actual pics/instructions.

Unless you're at WOT, it sounds horrible when the AFM kicks in from V4 to V8. I put mine back in.

Maybe try cutting the foam in half?

Hmm... This looks like a cool little mod... will try soon as I'm out of work and report. I am so glad that AFM wasn't activated on the M6, that would ruin my sound enjoyment so much

Sounds bad on the auto. Right when it switches out of AFM It just makes a loud drone for like 200rpm or so and then sounds normal. It's very V8 sounding but it's got this weird kinda fake tone to it. Maybe it sounds cool on WOT but just cruising sounds terrible. I put mine back in.

LOL I AM LOVING IT! I cant believe that little piece of shit foam makes such a difference! Thanks for the info! I wont lie, when i went WOT for the first time after removing it, it spooked me since i wasnt expecting that much of a change in sound. This plus putting the backseat down are by far the best little "mods" to add a little more rumble inside the cab, i love it!
