LT1 vs 1SS drivability

Howdy folks.

I tried the Search Function and got lots of performance and a vs b at the track threads.

I've been out of Camaro-land a bit. Would enjoy another one before they are sunset again.

I had a '17 1SS 1LE....favorite car I ever owned. It was mushed by an F250.....

How does the LT1 compared to the 1SS as far as driving and handling. They have the same motor. Don't think I can financially swing another 1LE these days and the Lt1 is looking good for a base V8.

Thank you!

Outside of mag ride, don't know if yours had it, I don't think there would be much of a difference.

I had an LT1 for 5 months and put 15k miles on it. Every other weekend I would put about 500 miles on it over some rough roads and it was fine.

The LT1 has 245 all-season tires all around, and the SS 1LE has staggered 285f/305r summer tires

I got my LT-1 with the NPP and the Tech Package, and it's a great handling car. It comes with the FE3 Performance Suspension, and the front Brembos. I'm not going to track my car, so it's perfect for my needs. My old Camaro was a 5th Gen 1SS, and this one is superior driving in every way. I paid just under $38K for mine, and it's the performance bargain of the century.

If you want to circuit track the car, go with a SS.

If the plan is to drag race, or cruise, you'll be happy with the LT1.

If you get leg cramps often, or at the strip a lot, I'd definitely buy bigger tires with the LT1. Whether they are aftermarket rims, or take-offs of a SS/ZL1, you WILL need them.

Had an LT1 for about 15k before my ZL1. This is pretty much the most accurate statement. The car gets ridiculously good gas mileage with the cylinder deactivation, but that honestly wasn’t my favorite feature as it makes uncomfortable sounds and is surely to fail down the road. 245s are a joke in the rear on a car of this power level.

thank you for the input folks.
I mostly just do some cruising on the weekends and Autocross a couple times a year. I'd get better tires.

Does the LT1 have some suspension and brakes as the 1SS without the 1LE package?

It has the performance suspension and front Brembos. Not sure if that is the same as the 1SS.

I’m not sure what tier the mag-ride comes in on the SS but the LT1 does not have mag-ride. Same FE3, just not as comfy in the LT1. Brakes can be same or different depending on options

Insurance wise, it's technically a 1SS. (even Alexis calls it a SS when I use it to unlock/lock the car)

1SS brakes up front, V6 brakes in the rear. SS suspension all the way around.

It seems that the rears are hard to convert to SS.

Tough to say on the Xcross. It would depend on how competitive you are, I guess. I think it handles good, and the brakes would be fine for short laps, but I don't have any experience on that one.

The SS Grill looks much better than the LT1. I thin k the SS also comes with a bigger infotainment screen.

Well, OP said he was primarily interested in driving and handling, which should be down to the tires, the LT1 probably has less traction due to the skinny rear tires (but that's an easy fix, and the LT1 is lighter).

Sure.

I just got back from my 2nd autoX of the season.

One thing about these cars, they are big and heavy, they need big tires/rubber to put the power down and make them turn. While no, you don't necessarily need 305s to AutoX, I would say that 245 rubber is pretty insufficient for these cars in the rear and front, but definitely the rear. Your raw times will probably be pretty poor, but your PAX is whatever it is and usually doesn't suffer as much.

Depends on how you want to do it though, buy some wide 19s or better yet, 18s, for AutoX and put sticky wide tires on them. That would arguably be better than buying an SS and not changing the wheels/tires.
