MRT V1 Axleback, unbearable drone.

Hey guys,

So I just had the MRT V1 axleback (http://www.shopmrt.com/Camaro-V6-Ver...t-p/91u800.htm) installed, and my head is about to explode from just the drive home. Literally the worst drone I have ever experienced, especially in the 3-4K range.

I know alot of the gen5 guys had the same problem and fixed it using the magnaflow x-pipe (http://www.phastekperformance.com/Ca...pipe-11386.htm), but they don't have the '16s listed. Since this is a universal piece of kit, and the gen 6 pipe is also 2.5", will it still work? And if not, is there anything out there that would work with the 6 gens?

Thanks!

You could try adding a Helmholtz resonator ala MBRP?

Yeah. I've heard the V2 has less drone but it's also much quieter in general.

It is mind boggling to me that the test engineers (I'm ASSUMING MRT took this and installed it on a LGX and drove it around at some point) listened to this and said "oh, this is ok, people will totally be able to live with it"...

Sorry to rant lol.

I'd have to buy two of these then right?

Would much rather have the xpipe, it would be like $50 cheaper :( hmmmm...

No like these:

MBRP uses them on their exhausts located just behind the rear axle:

I had the MRT v2 on my 2010 RS. The v1 was wayyy too raw... I thought the v2 was one of the best sounds available for the money on the 5th gen V6.

I like the mrt v1. In final gear it is quiet. I don't mind the rest.

Any time you do straight pipes...expect that. Period.

No sound absorption or cancellation is for those who want their cars as loud as physically possible or for attention.

If you want something refined, but has a wild side...run mufflers.

You can always weld in some 4 or 5 inch round mufflers to bring the drone down.

But are the v1 really considered straight pipe? They have small mufflers on the end. The v3 I can understand but not the 1 or 2 :/

The v1 and v2 have mufflers. They happen to emit tones that can resonate if you keep the tone too long at certain rpms and engine loads. Wot this causes it to sound awesome. Cruising can lead to resonation for a few seconds until you hit final gear. It should be very subdued even up to 80 in final gear.

not truly a straight pipe at all, but the mufflers are small, very small
the amount of packing material in them is virtually nothing really. not anything to quiet down what the giant resonator you just removed.

take a muffler like a MagnaFlow 4 inch or 5 inch round. the amount of packing material inside is far more than the resonators used on the v1 system. the good side to this, is it gives more variety of sound levels on the market.

given that if you look at the pipes going in, vs the over width of the v1 muffler, it doesn't seem to offer much more absorption than some resonated tips on the market.

after hearing the v1's in person, if I could put this into WEATHER terms where people can get a visual.

if no exhaust would be its freezing outside

the v3 (actual legit) straight pipes would be I'm gonna wear no shirt at all.

the v1 would be I'm gonna wear a long sleeve t-shirt. it may take the initial bite of the cold (think of the cold as sound) away, but nothing to actually deal with the bulk of the cold.

the v2 with the oval mufflers, with some thickness to em, would be like hey, its cold, I'm gonna wear a sweater.

you gotta remember, sound is subjective to each person. some people only enjoy classical music cause its majority a mellow genre. some may listen to metallic and cradle of filth because of the high energy and loudness. were all different.

with that being said, the resonators used on the v1 aren't big at all. in fact, are around the size of the normal bullet style resonators. and unless you get one really long, like 24-31 inches, its not gonna take much sound out. which means you will still get drone.

its not truly a straight pipe, obviously, but if you compare it to a 4 or 5 inch round muffler.... it basically is.

the stock muffler, when you see a big fixture as it is, theres prob not a lot of absorbing material inside, but a lot of chambers, to have sound cancellation and allowing hot exhaust a chance to cool down, which slows exhaust flow, but also quiets things down. its also lightweight, hence the theme of the new 6th gen.
