I was told this was normal. Your thoughts?

I brought my car to the dealer last week so I thought I would give an update on the ticking noise. A while ago I’ve noticed a loud clacking noise coming from the passenger side rear of the supercharger. This sound is heard best during the first 10-15 minutes of a cold start. The noise is so loud that you can hear it while sitting inside the car. Even after driving around, you can hear a faint tick. I can’t imagine that this is normal. Anyways, I was told by the dealer that this clacking noise is normal. I called GM and explained that I’ve been around other ZL1s that do not make this noise. They opened up a case and will be checking into the problem in a few days. What are your thoughts? Suggestions?

That doesn't sound normal. My ZL1 does not sound like that! Glad you have already called GM and got a case going! Hopefully they will figure it out!

That sounds like the blower lobes rattling. Possibly bearing going out in blower? Had same noise on my 2003 cobra and it was fixed under warranty. Ford ended up replacing my blower. Chevrolet needs to step up

I was told that it could be a lifter or possible the coupler inside the supercharger. It makes sense that it would be the coupler because it sits in the back of the supercharger, which is where the noise is coming from

Will second what RangerMan said. I’m no mechanic but that’s not ‘normal’. My ZL1 doesn’t sound like that, nor have any others I’ve been around. Good luck!

Yeah, sounds like the bearings or the isolator are going bad. It probably needs to make a little more noise before they replace it. Just keep on spinning it hard and it'll get worse.

You could remove the supercharger belt and start the engine. If the noise is no longer there then it’s blower related. If the noise is still there then it’s engine related.

You would think they would take the supercharger belt off and start it. I guess that’s too complex for the techs. We will see what GM decides to do. Not sure what my other options are if they declare that it’s normal

Bring it to a different dealer. I’m not a mechanic, but can tell that’s not normal.

Spoke to the rep today. They are going to contact the dealer to see what’s going on. I’m guessing that they are going to send someone directly from GM to diagnose the issue

GM is authorizing a supercharger replacement. They said it may take up to a month to get the supercharger

The new supercharger was installed but it still has the same issue. I was reading up on the TSB for the fuel line check valve. Can this be the culprit?? I spoke to someone with a ZLE who has the same issue. The dealer replaced his fuel line but the issue returned a few days later. He brought it back to the dealer and they tested a few other things. They were able to narrow it down to the fuel system. After disabling something the fuel system during their diagnostic test, the noise disappeared. They gave the car back to him and said the noise was normal, which it’s not. Is it possible that the new fuel line is defective?? This noise is driving me nuts

Go to a local auto store and buy a stethoscope, they are relatively inexpensive. Then start probing around .Had a set for years not used that much but gotten me out of a guessing game many times.
