Help with CEL, and...

I'll try to keep this short. Using the oBD scanner, code is p0480...cooling fan 1 control circuit.
Is this the big white fan behind the radiator?
The fan comes on after a couple minutes of driving. After unplugging and plugging it in, and five engine starts the CEL goes away, but comes back on the next start. Then, the radio went crazy. It was changing channels constantly on it,s own...not kidding. I disconnected the neg term in the trunk and when connected, the radio went back to normal and cel was gone again. On the next start, cel was back. I know the short answer is take it in, but I'm past 36,000 miles. Trying to fix it myself. Any ideas? Is the cooling fan working correctly, it never gets close to overheating...not yet...

Google "gm cel code p0480" - there is a bunch of info. This is probably the most useful information and has suggested diagnostic procedures.

I don't have a V6. But it appears, like most cars, you have 2 radiator fans. A good first line test is to open the hood with the engine on and A/C on high. Most cars default to the high fan speed for both fans when the A/C is on. You say the fan is running, but which one?

Although wiring may be the problem, in my experience is it either the fan itself or the fan control module.

It's covered, but they'll probably try to make you pay.

There are three specified major emission control components, covered for the first

8 years or
80,000 miles

of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) on 1995 and newer vehicles:
• Catalytic converters
• The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU)
• The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD)
(EGR), engine operating temperature and fuel system parameters are some of the systems
monitored and/or controlled by the electronic emissions control unit.

Don't rely on the fact that the engine is not overheating to judge cooling performance. The coolant takes a long time to warm up because there is so much. The fan is more critical for the A/C system, particularly when the car isn't moving. if you notice your A/C blowing warm when stopped at a light, that's a pretty good sign the fan is not blowing.

I finally just took it in. They replaced the cooling fan control module. They didn't want to cover it at first, but after my request, they contacted GM and agreed to cover it under warranty. Hopefully, the radio changing stations on its own was just some fluke and doesn't come back.

This.

I drove around for 2 days in low 90s trying to figure out what was wrong with my A/C, before noticing my coolant temps about 30 degrees higher than usual (and climbing) after stuck in bad traffic at lunch. Popped the hood and saw no fan running.
