Exhaust Leak

So, I recently installed Kooks headers with off road pipes and it's leaking from both sleeves that connect the pipes to the stock exhaust, I torqued them down with an impact as tight as I could but still leaking. Would it be worth it to take the sleeves off and put some permatex around where the pipes sit in the sleeve or should I just take it to an exhaust shop and have something welded?

Those clamps I thought are supposed to be torqued to a specific value to give the best chance against leaks. I use permatex extra copper and has worked to get the last tiny leaks done p

permatex extra copper or use some header wrap as a gasket of sorts. both have worked for me. slip fit stuff is annoying.

You need to unbolt the connectors and torque them down to 45 ft lbs. every time I have just hit them with my impact/electric ratchet until tight they leak but when I torque slowly to 45 ft/lbs (go back and forth on 2 bolts tightening a little at a time) the leaks are non-existent.

I had that problem with my Speed Engineering. They use a smaller clamp but I switched mine to the 4" wide stainless band clamps that covers more area. No real issues after that.

As mentioned in the second post use permatex ultra copper on slip fit connections. Then use a lap joint 2 bolt band clamp instead of the supplied single bolt clamps.

Can you use the lap joint vibrant clamps over the ball section? I guess it will squeeze it down?

No I don't think so. I thought he was talking about the slip sections leaking. The ball/flange section shouldn't leak unless something is wrong with the connection point from a manufacturing defect...or was damaged somewhere down the line.

I did without the ultra copper near the bolt. It’s been a few years without leaks but know those vibrant clamps really do a great job

about welding...I complained to a manuf about the fit and their clamps and leaking, I said I could have it welded and if I did that "it was modified and warranty void"...
