I'm looking at getting a second set of wheels for track days and want some input from from people that have tracked a regular ZL1 with 20" wheels and stock Goodyears vs. 19" wheels and 1LE Goodyears.


How do the Goodyear 3's hold up on the track? Cornering grip and durability. How do the Goodyear 3R's do on the track? Are they that much better and worth moving to a 19" wheel?


I will be driving to the track about 200 miles each way. I trailered the Viper and don't want to go back to that for several reasons. I don't really care about cutting a few seconds off my lap times, I just want the tire/wheel combo to work without drama. The track I will be going to mostly is Circuit of the Americas.

I've tracked CotA with the stock 20s wheels/tires and with 1LE spec wheels/tires. The stock tires are great on track. They heat up quickly and provide great grip and longevity (for a street tire). The 3Rs are next level when it comes to grip, with the downside they don't last as long, and don't work well in the cold or rain. They're perfectly fine to drive long distances on the street as long as it's warm and dry out, but you'll use them up in a hurry.

CotA will eat a set of 3Rs after 8-10 sessions.

I'd suggest leaving the car stock for now and trying it out and then mod as you see fit.

That's what I'm leaning towards since I already have the tires. I hit 1.2 g's in some of the turns in my Viper with the stock Pirelli Corsa's. I don't want to be disappointed and have a bunch of understeer because of the lack of grip.

smaller wheels = cheaper tires lol i have 20s but wish i would have gotten some 18s or 19s but oh well

Start with the Supercar 3 your car came with. They're excellent for exactly what you're describing.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I just got Michelins installed on the stock wheels. Just need to find some 20" wheels for the Goodyears.

stock goodyears are fine in the 20" 3s. 3rs come in the 19" 1LE sizes 325/305. Amazingly, 3rs are available in 20" now only 305/30-20. I have a few peak g readings nearly 1.4g on the stock 3s so you will be fine on the stock tires. They have great tread life on track compared to the 3rs which have excellent grip but abysmal wear.

I would love for GY to make the 3’s in the ZLE spec. A lighter 19” wheel, the extra tread width, an aggressive alignment and excellent wear rate would be a killer combo.

As others have said, the stock set is really surpringly good. I've run my car on about 10 track days now (i have 2 sets of the same stock wheels and tires) and I'm very pleased with them. Start with them until you get some track time. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Have fun.

I corded my 3Rs in 2 track days. They grip like mad but they aren't worth the money. Stick to your 20" 3s. They are 90% of the grip with 10x the longevity.

Other options for the stock 20s are R888R (285/315), Michelin Cup 2 and Hoosier R7.

I picked up a set of used wheels with near new R888Rs, and will be trying them out this spring. Like the OP, I'm not looking for ultimate lap times, but good performance balanced with good longevity. If the R888Rs are anywhere near as good as the NT01s I've had on other cars, I should be happy with them.

If not, I'll probably buy some 19s and use NT01 in ZLE sizes.

I am on my 2nd set of Firehawks Indy 500's after using Bridgestone pole position tires. A smaller wheel can help your gearing, this is why I prefer 18's. Goodyear tires I am not familiar with.

It's true, 3Rs go away really fast and throw every bit of road debris at your paint and rockers and puncture easily...But...OMG, the dry and warm grip is phenomenal.

A fair trade in my book.
