Drag races

I went to my local Drag racing facility on Friday night. First time ever at a drag racing event. Wow! I thought my Camaro was fast, but these boys come with some FAST machines. Man oh man, some of these rockets were doing the 1/4 mile in a little over 8 seconds at speeds around 150. whew! There were some Camaros competing, and they were coming in around 11.5 to 13.5 on average. They won't let me race mine unless I get a role bar on my convertible. Dang. I would love to take it down "a legal" run. Oh well. Had a ball watching all of these other machines. Snowmobiles too!

No convertibles at all there without a roll bar? Here in Saint Louis you can race the convertibles without a roll bar. Until you get fast enough, then you need a roll bar .

If you are 13.5 sec or quicker, you will need a roll bar on a 'vert. Check your track's rules to confirm that.

And your SS will be that quick, so that's why you were turned away.

If it's factory setting, they should let you run without kicking you out. Once you start modifying and you run below the tracks minimum rule, then you get kicked off the strip and have to add roll bars. Are you sure you weren't cocky with the tech inspector at the track? He/she probably didn't like your approach and decided not to let you make a pass...

Noooo. I did the smart thing and emailed the track first. Simply asked if I needed one and they responded yes. As mentioned above, I'm sure it's because my car is capable of doing 13.5 or less in the 1/4.

Personally, I would've just rolled out there and paid to race. Maybe the receptionist got your email and didn't explain your vehicle as being completely stock...

Last year during camaro fest in ky I got to run my vert but only one time due to some mods I was having installed there. It ran a 13.4 with cai only and nothing was said about a roll cage.

Every track is different - I've seen it both ways for 'verts. My 1996 Z/28 convertible was never questioned - but the car was only doing 13.69 @ 103mph on it's best pass - there may be a point where they question it. Definitely ask some other tracks - and do let them know the car is stock, some times those have a different set of rules.

I will mention that the car is stock with only a CAI. I do have a revolution sports bar, lol, but that won't count. I'll try again. Thanks for all the responses. I would feel so intimidated though. Never been to one. Have no front brake to "spin" the tires for warm up. Talk about green.

Off the clutch and right to the foot-brake - as long as you stage really shallow into the water that'll work just fine. Street tires don't like too much heat anyways, just clean 'em up good is about all I ever do.

You shouldn't feel intimidated. The track is where you are supposed to learn your/vehicles capabilities. It's a controlled environment where it should be safe for all racers and spectators.

Also, you should be able to power brake and warm those tires up. Read the owners manual and learn how to take the traction control off (this will allow you to power brake). Additionally, with stock tires, you really don't have to warm them up either... just keep the traction control on, pull around the water box, and stage. The more you practice and talk among other racers, the more you will learn, and you'll pick up some tricks along the way. Good Luck and Have Fun Out There!
