Programming new key fob
I've been reading into programming a new key fob for my 2010 2LT. I don't have any master key currently. I purchased 2 new keys online cut to my vin, and I've tried different ways to program the keys to my car with nothing working. Its parked and I already payed $200+ for 2 keys, and I'm trying to avoid towing/programming at a dealership which would cost me about another $300. I'd appreciate any help
thanks |

Why exactly don't you have a key already? You have to have a programmed key in order to do it yourself. This is to avoid somebody getting a key with the VIN and hoping in and driving off. That would make it too easy. Since you don't have a master key they are going to want/will look up proof that the car is in fact yours.
You were taken advantage of with the keys. I paid $35 for one key. Buyer beware.

The DIY method only works if you have an already programmed key that works.
With all new keys, it will need to be programmed at the dealer with SPS equipment. |

I can't understand why people will try and save a few bucks buying online and then it ends up costing them more when they finally do take it to the dealer which is what they should have done in the first place. At least when it comes to new keys and fobs.

In this case yes, aren't new keys about $100 anyways? I'd go for tthe savings is it were $35 keys like My Caroline found.
I had a key replaced under warranty and these were the steps I did that worked. 1) stick old key into ignition and turn to "on" (it's the position before "start") 2) turn off and take out old key 3) quickly (like a few seconds) insert new key and turn to "on"

well I have lost both of my original keys. I ordered my keys online cut by vin(you had to provide proof of ownership) I tried the method of:
1. Close all vehicle doors. 2. Insert the key into the ignition. 3. Hold down the power UNLOCK button on the driver’s door panel(CENTER FOR US CAMARO OWNERS)-continue to hold down until instructed to release in step 9. 4. Perform steps 5 through 8 in fairly rapid succession. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (as far as you can go without starting the engine). 6. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. 7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. 8. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. 9. Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The vehicle will lock and unlock the doors automatically. 10. Hold down the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously until the door locks and unlocks. This step may take up to 30 seconds. 11. Repeat step 10 NOW for each additional transmitter (including any existing transmitters). 12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode. still didn't work for me though, with either key |

I believe that you have to have 1 ORIGINAL fob in order to program a new one.

If you do not have any existing programmed key fobs, you will need to have a dealer program the car for the new ones with SPS programming equipment. Keys are cheaper if ordered precut. That would save the expense of paying someone to cut the blanks. A dealer should know that, it's in a bulletin. If the dealer insisted on ordering blanks, and then cutting those, they've got some explaining to do.... and maybe some refunding of monies. The precut keys are much cheaper than most places cutting labor, which is why they sell them precut so people don't have to pay a fortune for new keys. If all existing keys lost, give up on trying to DIY it. The car will need to be programmed. |

Retail on these keys from a dealer is $50 for one with remote start and $40 for one without remote start. There are several vendors on here that sale them as well and charge even less. Programming cost about $30 depending on dealer labor rates. If you went to your dealer first you would have had 2 keys programmed for half of what you paid online. |

You guys are all getting ripped off. Maybe I got lucky and my dealer does it at cost? Most dealers don't have the machinery to cut our keys, it's very expensive machinery. I bought a brand new key with remote start, as a blank, cut by the dealer for $35. Programming will only cost you $20-30 in labor at the dealer. You may even be able to get them to pay for the tow truck "under warranty". OP you are just going to have to pay for it to be done. As I said before, it can't be made too easy. I like it to be difficult to steal my car.

LOL....I just called my local dealer and they wanted $180 and to keep my car for HALF A DAY to program my fobs!! Rat bastards!! I had to buy new fobs as my old one just fell apart and won't stay back together. Got tired of using rubber bands to hold it together, so I got two fobs on Ebay for $27.00, and now just have to get them cut so I can program them myself! I don't want to take the new fob apart to put in the old key as I'm not sure how to do it right, and don't want to break it. Hope it all works!
