Oh really? Is that what that means? I just figured like "CARBON"by design they would also do fiberglass versions for those who don't want carbon fiber. Might as well still get a sale from the people who don't care about CF.

carbon fiber doesnt have to stay in raw form. it can be painted just like fiberglass. most people who do carbon fiber on cars like these actually paint it. they do it more for the weight properties than the look.

To be fair most of the aftermarket carbon fiber parts on the market today are made of one layer of carbon fiber and the rest being cheap chopped strand matt fiberglass. This is usually done to save money and since most people can't tell the difference its a win for the company and the customer is happy cause they got the look they were after but the cost is the weight that could have been saved. Quality made carbon fiber parts are very expensive and there is a large difference in the weight and strength between that and a inexpensive fiberglass version with just a carbon fiber first layer.

Spot on. And that is why ALL of them are avoiding the critical questions. What is the composition, and how much does it weigh?
Some of the merch's say they don't know but will find out," and never do",and some flat out ignore them. And then there was one along with it's cronies that thought these questions were,"immature" and ridiculous. When someone answers these questions to my satisfaction they will have a quick sale. I'll even give the answers. They are not trick questions. (see above) Sorry if this is construed as a pirate post.

i understand how they are made. thats why they charge more for a carbon fiber under hod. because they just do fibergass and gel coat it. the first thing i do is ask what the weave pattern is,how much it weighs and the k of the fiber.

The best questions to ask for overall would be if core was used(this is not always needed and you tend to find it more in race car parts than street car stuff), what type of resin it was made with, what process was used to make the hood such as infusion, vacuum bag or open mold, and what type of resin was used. To keep cost down alot of places will use polyester resin since its the cheapest but the downside to that is it shrinks over time which is one reason cheap hoods tend to warp over time also it tends to have less strength overall versus epoxy resin. There are other ester based resins that cost more and work better due to less shrink and a better overall bond but most high quality parts are made with epoxy resin. The weight of the fabric is important but you can make one part many ways and keep the strength up so. Example you can have a fabric that weighs 30oz but woven so it has all the directions woven in (the 0, 45, 90 degrees) and one layer of that will provide a more balanced layup than on layer of 30oz just woven just at 90. Weave pattern does play a role in strengh but in the aftermarket automotive parts it would be a very small role unless you start to get into structual parts which I couldn't think of any small company getting crazy enough to try that. Most companies use 2x2 twill it drapes easier and gives a more 3d effect to it that everyone is used to seeing but I prefer plain weave myself. The honda guys used to call it spoon weave. In the end its your money and you decide how to spend it but in composites from what I have learned you always get what you pay for.
