Buying from member seller?
Hey forum,
What is the best acceptable way to buy from private members these days? Haven't gone this route in years and might be (am) rusty. Thx, Russ

My best experiences have been dealing in cash and in person. Things start getting skewed with shipping intangibles and photos not matching products once inspected in person... in other words, be careful...

Every one asks for cash but it’s very dangerous. I ended up making a bank transfer once I saw and tested the car. It’s easier if you have an acct in the same bank as the seller.

If you are talking parts from the forum? PayPal for goods and services.
Use some caution I would never buy anything from say a user that joined just today and his first thread is a for sale. I would also only buy from someone that is somewhat of a active user. Look at users other threads ask for eBay feedback etc. also beware of getting a IM from a user with friend that has that item, that’s a scam on other forums I frequent. You only have protection if you use goods and services, friends and family and PayPal won’t help you and you also violated terms of use. The last item I bought, I offered to reimburse the fee, once I got the part seller agreed and I followed through as soon as inspected the item. |

I bought my car from a forum member here close to a year ago. I worked with my bank to get all the paperwork done for a wire transfer. I took the guys card that I worked with on the transaction and told him what I was doing and not to send the money until I called the next day. I flew down to Florida, put eyes on the car to make sure it was as described. when everything matched up I called him up and he put it through and drove the car away. The previous owner had the money later that day.

I flew to TN from NH with bank check in hand checked out the car. Bought it and followed the seller to his bank (on my way home anyway) and he verified the check and I was on my way.

If it's a smaller part, I wouldn't mind having it shipped. The PayPal goods and services is a good option as extra "insurance" in case something goes wrong with the deal. Be willing to pay the extra couple of percent that it costs. PayPal takes it out of the money they send to the seller, they don't charge the buyer the amount. If it's something you're buying in person, and can inspect it first, cash is always king, but I've sold things to people in person and gotten paid through PayPal or Venmo.
For a car, a cashier's check or wire transfer are the best options. If you need financing, a credit union will be more willing to work with you on how to pay the seller. It's the route I took when I needed a loan for a car I bought from an individual.

It is for parts to be shipped. I planned on using Paypal G&S but wanted to make sure it was still the best way.
Thx for all the advice guys.
