Billet thermostat housing

Just wanted to throw out there that I am incredibly happy with my recent purchase of the DMS billet thermostat housing and post up some photos, since I see there appears to be a lack of them installed on anyone's car.. it adds subtle looks to the engine bay that isn't too over the top, AND it also provides resilience that the stock housing doesn't offer due to it being plastic and the upper hose being right in the line of fire of the belt if it ever snaps off or an idler seizes and munches the belt to shreds. No more risk of the plastic housing cracking either.

The option to use a more universal LS2/LS3 style thermostat assembly itself is a pretty nice feature as well. I wound up going with a factory GM 186* instead of their 160* which is still a step down in temp from the 194* that our cars come with provided by DMS themselves. Made the changes in HPTuners to make the most out of the new lower temps. Peace of mind and a worthwhile mod overall for a minimal amount of money.

Looks just like the AMP housing I put on mine. Like you say don't have to be concerned with belt break taking out cooling system.

What's the part number, I think that's a great idea, I'm stock so I'll just use the housing an retain the 194 stock thermostat. Replacing the housing shouldn't impact the warranty. But I'm going to check with my Service Department Manager.

I actually was going to go with the amp, but between the taxes and shipping I couldn't justify paying what seemed like another $50 for nothing. I like how the upper nipple is a threaded piece on those.

LT160BLK-1

You can run a 174, a 180, or a 186 without needing to modify anything within the tune. I only modified the tune to optimize the most out of it and because I am modified in other areas.

Thanks for the info.

Do you have a link or part number for the 186 thermostat you got?

I got the same billet housing and went with a Scoggin Dickey 180 thermostat, but not sure if that is the best one to go with. I wanted an OEM one.

Car is stock and no plans for a tune.

I do not. You'll have to contact DMS themselves and request they do that for you.

However, the GM LS3 186* thermostat is and was standard on those cars for a long time so it should be insanely easy to find even if they can't provide you with one instead of the 160* that it normally comes with.

Upon breaking a Gates RPM series belt in my 19 ZL1 I found out why these exist. Killed that plastic unit and left me stranded. I ordered the AMP unit immediately.

I wish they sold these offerings for the boosted versions of my truck. They suffer the same issues. A belt snaps, see ya t stat housing!

Well you get what you pay for generally. LOL What not buy CHINESE if cost was a concern??? I prefer to buy things only ONCE and if that means it cost more money for a higher quality part, then I am fine with that. Just because a part looks identical, doesnt make it so. The Chinese and other foreign manufacturers are ABSOLUTELY Brilliant when it comes to making KNOCKOFFS of higher quality products. Go to any SEMA show and you can see chinese knockoffs of KOOKS headers that to the naked eye look very very similar to REAL thing for under 200 dollars.

In reality the materials used are generally substandard and the worksmanship is inconsistent and WILL NOT stand the test of time.

Buy once, cry once boys. These cars are top tier and should be treated as such when working on them when it comes to replacement parts. If you want cheap, that's fine, but understand that you will be replacing it sporadically at some point, usually on the sooner side.

I have no problem paying for a part that improves reliability in the particular area that it's addressing. Similar to the Katech vs. GM oil pump debate. Buy once cry once. I'd rather replace something and never think about it again nor worry about it every time I go for a drive wondering if this will be that once time something grenades, breaks, cracks, splits, etc.
