It will end when they start yearly taxing cars on there displacement, they do it in Europe. It has been talked about at SEMA.

A better question would've been how long will the OHV V8 last?
OHC V8's will stick around, but I think investment in future eight cylinder OHV's may be in jeopardy

In the days of my youth (I was told what it means to be a man)..... sorry, listening to Led Zep too much lol
In the days of my youth, the V8 was 150 hp and got 18-22 mpg. Everyone lamented the "good old days" when V8s got 375 hp. Today the V8 has 455 REAL hp and gets 30+ mpg with half the emissions. If the V8 is going away it's sure having a hard time. |

I recently traded in a car with a 2.3 l. turbo engine that put out 350 hp in a small awd chassis. It was fun and pretty frugal ( 27 mpg ), but when I drove my 1 SS 1LE home , I realized that there is nothing more beautiful to drive than a v8 with all that low end torque. I was in 6th gear around 80 mph and under 2000 rpms.

I actually think I might jump ship to the mid-engine corvette some day if it proves to be reliable...certainly not gonna get the first model year like I did with the 6G Camaro.

I don't see all v8's in danger. Large displacemnent, read 5+ liters, may be more likely on the chopping block.
If I had to put money on it, I can see most manufacturers moving to 3.XL-4.XL TT v8's in the near future. Supplemented with hybrid electric motors for everything from performance to efficacy would be a necessity.
