The Chevy V8 as we know it is certainly ending in the next few years unless GM decides to maintain two V8 families ( three if you count Cadillac's V8 as its own family). Unless GM maintains an OHV engine family for the trucks, the Small Block looks to be going DOHC by 2022( LT1 slated to end production in 2021).

This topic has come up for at least the last ten years and my bet is that we will be asking it ten years from now as well.

Even if American stops making them, aftermarket companies will continue making them and then offer upgrade kits to swap out your whatever you have and drop in a V8. The automaker will then see and say ...hey there is still a market for those big V8s and then they will again start making them.

I have been hearing this V8 demise holocaust story since the early 1970's. But now you can buy a V8 not only from the American companies, you can buy a V8 from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyndai, and even Kia (among others). There seem to be more manufacturers making V8's than ever before. The sad part is that one day there may not be V8's being produced any more, but that will be after folks have said they would be going away any day now for probably 50 years, and those same folks will say, "see, I told you so....".

imagine how those poor steam car drivers felt at the beginning of last century.if the V8 goes away it will be because it was replaced by something better and more powerful, which i dont see anytime real soon.

I would love to see a quad cam turbo V6 replace the pushrod V8.
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but check out the Indy car power plant. That should be the paradigm for muscle cars going forward. |

I understand this has been said for years but with the advancement of electric and eco (turbo) cars I can actually see this happening in some form. I think they'll dwindle down to a few niche vehicles sooner than we expect, but who knows for sure when this will take place, if it does.

Pretty sure GM has made their future intentions clear. To them, electric is the only future.
