I love it. I won't have the opportunity to track my SS 1LE until October but I've tracked other cars with similar wheels and it's great. The only thing I don't like is the alcantara shift boot. It collects a lot of debris.

I love it on the track with gloves, it really helps to hold the wheel with less fatigue and a lighter touch.
Unfortunately, on the street, after 10500 miles it already looks worn and apparently has minor water (or sweat?) staining. I clean it gently with a brush and rubbing alcohol every 1000 miles or so but it still wears very fast. I am considering switching to OEM leather. OP, how much did it cost to swap the wheel and knob to OEM? Did you DIY, or is the airbag tricky to do? |

I feel the exact same way, I have had my 1LE for almost a week now and I just hate the feel.
I too will be swapping out for a base SS wheel and shifter. It's next in line for first mods right after clear bra and Ceramic Pro.

I just can't stand it bare-handed. And I've already compared the two wheels with gloves on and the leather wheel still has good grip, like the perfect amount. So I just don't see where the Alcantara is better, except for differentiating the 1LE and Zl1 from the lower trim models. It feels cheap like something you'd pick up at a discount fabric store. It seems like a good material for somewhere you don't touch like a headliner or dash piece, but on a wheel and shift knob its an epic fail. Honestly I think its just a trendy thing they started putting in luxury cars because it was cheap and they could convince people it was expensive by putting it in special "packages" and now that practice has trickled down into other niches like performance cars. Seems like many people aren't drinking the kool-aid though:
https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/commen...mium_material/ https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/commen...ith_alcantara/ I got my leather stuff from Wild Hammer Motorsports $275 for the leather wheel $135 for the leather shift knob and boot The swap can be done in your garage if you have the tools, in a couple hours. There is a youtube video by LethalCamaro that shows you how to do it. Getting the airbag out is actually pretty easy. There are two connectors with a couple mini tabs that need to be simultaneously lifted in order to disconnect them. I had to use two very small screw drivers to do it, and once I found the proper way to do it, it was simple. Last edited by protovack; 07-20-2018 at 03:55 PM. |

I love the alcantara, but I understand that some don't. Totaly personal preference. What would be great is if GM did what Porsche does with it's GT cars: alcantara is standard, but leather wheel/shifter are no cost options. Not many companies offer the level of individual personalization that Porsche does though (it comes at a heafty price).

great for the seats and trim. But I hate it on the steering wheel, even with gloves on the track.

I'm a Leather guy from way back. But I'm loving the Alcantra. I only use Sonax to clean it regularly and its looks like new each time.

I had an alcantara steering wheel and shifter in my 5th gen which I daily drove 40k miles with. If you are daily driving 15k-20k miles a year, I recommend picking up a leather steering wheel, shifter, and shift boot. I noticed a trend that most people who really "enjoy" their alcantara pieces either track the car a lot or barely drive it.
I have alcantara in my 6th gen 1LE which Im not putting tons of miles on and in a cooler climate so I'm enjoying it quite a bit more. |

does anyone know if the vette steering wheel fits? it looks very similar down to the volume control buttons. Plus its got the non-perforated leather which I find wears better

Alcantara is the standard for performance cars. Definitely a good choice for the 1LE. I love mine

I love the micro suede on our cars. 3300 miles, but I drive with gloves in 90% of the time. Still looks brand new. Only brushed it once dry, with a suede brush.
My racecar has a suede Sparco wheel. Absolutely love it. The sparco gloves stick to It like glue. |

Don't own a ZL1 yet but did own an M3 competition package with standard alcantara steering wheel, drove it as a daily for 5 years and liked it a lot. Never had any grip issues or anything, looked great too til it started to wear off. Surprised how many people dislike it.
