I don't think it's common enough. Given the sample size here, we'd be seeing a lot more threads popping up.

Still pretty serious if it happens at the worst possible time.

Good luck, looks like you woke them up. Some dealers are full of lazy, incompetent techs who are there just to make a buck. No pride whatsoever in their work. A good tech would have done the research.

I think they change the entire rack so they get a new torque sensor AND a new rack motor.

Too bad the dealer still acts so lost. With your video, they should change the rack assembly. Other dealers have done that.

Sometimes there are no DTC codes because the event does not last the programmed minimum amount of time. Your video should cover no DTC codes...

This is a clear case of GM bean counters choosing a 70% reliable $3.00 part over a 95% reliable $5.00 part.

The bean counters multiply the $2.00 savings times 1.7 million units total and Voila!

More cash in the Generals bank acct. Don't mind the loss of steering control please.

If someone from GM is really flying in to check a known problem lasting for more than a decade, they are truly inept.

Have them change the rack.

This is very isolated so no recall.

Well, at this point I kinda do hope they hurry up. I'm also not sure why they just can't go and replace the rack and give me my car back.

Just to be prepared though, if they blow this off... is it time to lawyer up or lemon law?

Some service managers will listen to your info and get it done.

You could try a different dealer if needed.

Make sure they do a full alignment after, including resetting the steering ANGLE sensor, or the steering wheel won't always be centered.

Replace torque sensor or entire rack, and reset the angle sensor after alignment.

If you need it, I recommend these guys to start:

Okay... Now I'm going to need help because the patient and nice way just isn't working.

They are telling me they went by everything in the bulliten and they could not replicate the issue, when I clearly have a video:

of it failing while I'm driving...

Because they can't replicate the issue they say they can't just replace the torque steering sensor unit without fully knowing its the cause of the issue and the reason they can't is because they won't be imbursed by GM for the repair.. ..so they rather let me have the car back, let the issue happen again and let me kill a family or two... I told them I'm not accepting it back and I will lawyer up if I have to, and I also got the dealership (not shop) manager involved who recommended they get another engineer, but also told me that even he was powerless in the matter. I'm not taking it back with the power steering randomly failing. It's unacceptable.

I'm thinking of going to another dealership but the next closest dealer is about 70 miles away and I would definitely need a loaner. I'm going to find out about doing that on Monday when they open. In the mean time though if Chevy decides not to fix this, there's no way I can keep this car while its doing this...whats my next step?

Go to the GM at dealer, Tell him it is intermittent and the car is not safe to drive. So you are not taking it. Leave it with them and you want a loaner car till they fix it. Go talk to other dealers in Round Rock or Georgetown. GM Austin dealers have always acted sort of aloof to me.

If you feel you must take it, next time it happens, have a flat bed delivery it to the dealer of your choice.

Yeah, Im really thinking of just picking it up because it sounds like this is going nowhere.. Kinda irritates me because I missed Camarofest because of this. I refused to pick it up before but they're refusing to do anything so I'm at a stalemate...I called GM customer serivce and made them aware of the issue and supposedly they're going to call back in two days so maybe something will budge going that route.

Meanwhile -- Does anyone happen to know of a dealership anywhere near Austin, DFW, San Antonio, or Houston where they successfully had THIS specific issue FIXED, and know who they talked to?

Not really, but if your in DFW area Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine would be one I would check out. Based on volume alone, they sell a lot of vettes and camaros.

Meh, Dealership is taking their time with this, they sent for another GM Specialist. I called a few other dealerships (Round Rock, Cavendar) and they gave me the same spill, unless they can duplicate the issue regardless of if I have a video or not they aren't going to replace the steering torque sensor.

I called GM customer service, they're coordinating with the dealership who has my car but have not once spoken to me about the issue, not even the initial call.. nor have they called back since I reported the issue a week ago..

Im really believing this may end up becoming a Lemon Law claim.
