Convertible capacity for a vacation?
Hello everyone,
First post here on the Forum. I know questions like this have been asked all over the Internet but I wanted to get more focused answers given my particular specifications. I don't have a Camaro but I have one reserved for a trip to Florida in a few months (convertible). I'm concerned that everyone in my family will fit. There's me (5'11"; will be driving), my wife (5'8"), and my two sons (6'4" and 5'10"). My thought was to have me driving and the taller son in the front but just move the seats up as much as possible, with the other son behind me and my wife behind the taller boy. We also will have one smaller suitcase (like a medium sized soft roller bag) and four smaller soft bags. We are flying into Ft. Lauderdale and then driving to Key West, then from Key West up to Anna Maria Island near Sarasota. That's a 7 hour drive and where my concern is mostly at. What do you all think? Is this doable? Driving to the Keys in a convertible is on my wife's bucket list so I'd hate to not be able to do it. Thanks for all of your help! Jerry |

Not really, given the size of your family. My S.O. is 5'0" and can barely fit in the back and that's with the front seat pulled almost all of the way up. And the luggage will never fit in the trunk of a Camaro convertible.
Find some other convertible and enjoy the trip! |

That's disappointing. I was really hoping to make it work.
I've read that the softer bags could possibly fit under the top when it is stowed. They will compress as they will only have clothes in them for the most part. I don't think that there really IS a bigger convertible, is there? The company I rented with says my choices will be either a Camaro convertible or a Mustang convertible. I probably will just have to show up and see which one is less "painful". Not having a convertible isn't really an option. |

get the others a bus ticket and drive solo. Your vacation can then start immediately.

I agree. You will come away completely hating the Camaro. My two grandsons can ride in the back seat, but they are much smaller. With two boys the size of yours, and all that luggage, it will be a tight squeeze. You can get it all crammed in there, but you will have a car full of unhappy passengers after about 45 minutes.

So...do I dare say I should choose the Mustang then?

You're gonna have more room in the Mustang, but neither is gonna be a great choice for your family by what you described.

Just go to a dealer and sit in one instead of speculating. I would say three adults is tight, four is probably pushing it. The bags should be fine, but the legs won't fit!

I thought about that, but I was wondering if a dealer would waste the time letting me just do a capacity check with having no intention of buying.

I've thought about a Jeep...and so has the family. Problem is that - from my research - Jeeps aren't a common commodity at car rental sites. I looked for one about a year ago. It was almost twice the price and the rental location was in Orlando.
I got a really good rental deal on this (under $400 for over a week) too...so it would really suck if if won't work out (either the Camaro or the Mustang). |

No chance that will work. Rent a sedan. I have one. It's a good two seater maybe 3 in a pinch with minimal luggage.
