But, you have to remember to download those maps in advance, right? And, if your phone doesn't have a lot of free space on it, that might be a problem?

Personally, I'm not terribly worried about having the most up-to-date maps in my car. Most differences are minor.

If you plan a route, it probably preloads some or all of the associated map segments into a cache, which takes up a fraction of the full offline download. At least that's what I'd do and those google folks are very likely much smarter about their technology.

In the Camaro I use the factory navigation nevertheless, and the one time I used google maps (in the wife's car) it did lead me into the wazoo the other day, so it isn't infallible either.

Yeah, none of it is perfect. I have had Waze create stupid routes as well.

If I were going to travel where there was no cell service and I had no dedicated GPS unit, I would work hard to make very sure that your thinking about local caching was correct.
