You have forged pistons so it's not as critical as the Lt1, they don't like you boost level at all.

CJ (or anyone else) - Did you notice if your STFTs/LTFTs, in OL, changed much? OR - is your PI only coming in under WOT?

I thought I was closing in to a good conclusion, but noticed, in CL, my trims were kinda' bouncing around with the PI (because I have to bring it in a little, while I'm in CLOSED LOOP so I can smooth-out the transitions in-and-out of PI-operation). I'm fairly confident why I'm seeing this, but I was hoping I could see what you noticed, too.

Thanks!

I only have PI come in at WOT.

I dont recall the exact numbers, but theres a pretty wide dead zone for me between something like 7khz and 9.5khz on the MAF that almost never gets hit. My PI transition range is 8khz to 9khz... so 90% of the time PI is just on or off.

I havent tried to force things into that range by holding high gears at low speed or anything. I also havent done a ton of heavy part throttle tuning where that range would probably get hit more, but im sure it would be out of closed loop under those conditions as PE would be kicking in.

I am not currently using LTFT. I may turn it back on in the future, but during tuning i found it easier to just leave it off.

Not sure if that had anything to do with the seal issue or not. There's some potential that it had wedged itself behind the balancer hard enough that it touched and damaged the seal.

There was also some rust in strange places on the balancer hub/shaft. I can understand why there was some closer to the front since it's basically not protected, but I was surprised to see some towards the rear tapered section. That should be inside the engine and exposed to oil.

I considered getting a new ATI balancer and crank pulley, but didn't want to delay any longer, so I just took some 2000 grit sandpaper and polished it all up as well as possible. Looks like none of the sealing surfaces themselves had rust.

Emptied the catch can for the first time. Wasn't sure it was even working given the seal issues, but there was about a teaspoon or two of oil in there. It probably only has a couple thousand miles on it (if that). But the presence of oil seems to indicate it is doing what it is supposed to do.

Given the good compression test and leakdown results, it seems more likely to me that the belt got jammed around the balancer and worked its way deep enough to ruin the seal rather than strictly due to crankcase pressure.
I haven’t been on here much lately but it’s good to see you didn’t have to tear this down for the “upgrades”. Your entire build has been good shared knowledge.

I didn't think you had since I hadn't really seen any posts. Everything OK? It has been a little boring and the sites been down a lot. Glad your back.

I appreciate the positive feedback. Good to know this info is helping others.

I think between you with PC, Radz with a 2650 and me with a 2300 have hopefully helped some others on deciding if they want to go the THPSI port injection direction. Probably help you and Radz learn more about tuning.

This has been a good excuse to drive more.

I'm pretty close, I think, to being done with 95% of the tuning. These transitions have been a little tough, and even though the car has totally felt fine (no surging or cutting-out during these transients) for a while, I kept finding a thing or two, here and there, that were bugging me (e.g. STFT/LTFTs weren't trending cleanly), and with getting those cleaned up, everything keeps getting smoother and smoother. I have to do a lot of blending, to bring the PI in, but I feel like it's a trade-off that's worth it. At least - for now.

(Just a small distraction in your thread CJ)

Yes sir I’m doing great! Thanks for asking. Work has been so busy. Understaffed, no qualified people looking to get hired and tough to get entry level interests.

Spring has sprung. This place will/is full of some good track talk. Are you doing ok?

No worries. Just got my reflex back from getting a hardware update, so should be able to get things literally back on the road soon.

Feel free to distract away!

I miss doing machine work with my CNC mill and lathes.... would be very handy to still have my shop. All i have now is a cheap drill press with an even cheaper harbor freight xy table

I shoulda kept it all, but it was worth too much to sit idle 99% of the time since i went back to software development. It was a tiny garage based shop, but still... i really enjoyed that work.

Heck yeah I understand how you would miss the shop. Pair that with a 3D printer for R&D purpose and you might never stop making parts.

The only real issue is not making parts when its more cost effective to make a purchase. Of course the other side of that discussion is buying parts that some of these shops make that are poor quality.

What was upgraded in your Reflex?

Got mine back as you know, mine was delayed a little because of the Holiday, have it mounted and now just waiting for my blower to get back next week to get it back on and should have it running whatever day it gets back.

What was upgraded in your Reflex?
The reflex hardware i originally purchased was susceptible to heat soak which could have caused erratic behavior.

I dont know what was actually upgraded, only that it was a hardware modification to mitigate the heat soak issue.

It wasnt something that i specifically experienced, but THPSI sent out a notification that anyone who purchased before (i think) early May should send it in for a free hw update. So i did that since it was down for the front seal issue anyway.

Took it for a test drive yesterday. LS3 seal seems to be working. Just cruised for a while and did some short-shift test hits since i still need to work on the tune to reign in the peak boost and TCC slip issues.

I reflashed my bin file from the one i had on my comp just to be safe. If you dont have your bin file stored, you might want to download your bin and eyeball it just to make sure its right. I dont think they changed the bin file on mine but you never know. Flashing a bin seemed to be one of the items on their QC checklist they included... so theres always a chance the wrong one got flashed back...

Im a suspicious fellow for sure.
