Tow Rigs Discussions and Pics

I've noticed that quite often the subject comes up pertaining to trucks and thier capabilities. Plenty of us are both truck AND car guys so why not have a thread to discuss our prefered choices and give a place to showcase a few pics. Here's my 2001 Chevrolet 2500 HD with the big 8.1L. I bought it about one year ago to tow my C5Z to HPDE and it has proven to be more than up to the task.

Nice tow rig! I lug my stuff to and from the race track with my 1993 Dodge D350, equipped with the venerable first gen 12v Cummins turbo diesel and 5spd manual transmission. I often say "it won't do anything fast, but it will do anything" and I've found that to be fairly accurate. I've resisted the urge to really turn up the old Cummins, and kept it fairly sedate. That means excellent fuel mileage though, which is a trick these old trucks are pretty good for, and even pulling the car it's not hard to be in the upper teens.

4.10 gears limit my top speed to 88mph, but it will cruise comfortably at 70mph and pull any grade with the trailer and car behind it without a downshift. All the power options work, and the air is ice-cold. I learned to drive in this truck as a teenager - my grandfather bought it new. When he passed, it just felt right to keep it in service in the family, and it serves as an incredible reminder of all the time and love we shared together, many of it connected to that old 1-ton.

I’ve got a few…
The ‘22 is my DD
The ‘72 is another one of my babies, I did a frame off on it a few years ago but it still needs paint.
The ‘98 was my dads for a long time, I’ve owned it since 2011.
I’ve got a few more but I’ll leave it here for now…

My 2017 RAM 1500 Laramie, was pretty well optioned. It trailered my Dutchemen Denali 289RK for 1000s of miles. The I got my 2020 RAM 1500 Limited, loaded out. It towed it a bunch more. Both trucks 5.7 Hemi with 3.92s and 4x4 Crew Cabs.

I sold my trailer, as we got out of camping for now so the 2020 Limited became my ZL1 -

The 2020 RAM limited was the best tow vehicle I have encountered - RAM Box for storage, 4 corner active air suspension (made hooking, unhooking and general ride quality 2nd to none), the bed divider and the multifunction tailgate. I could open the short side with the trailer hooked up. 33 gallon tank and I could go about 250 to 350 miles on a tank towing this trailer depending on traffic and terrain.

Below is the 2017 Laramie

Unfortunately, the only thing I towed with it so far was this little trailer so I could rent a brush hog from Home Depot.

I just bought this to tow with. 2024 GMC 2500HD AT4 with the 6.6L V-8 & 10 speed Allison. A 1500 would have done the job but I HATE AFM!!!!

Just a few days ago I picked up a Chevy Silverado 2500HD LTZ with the same engine/trans setup. Very much overkill for an aluminum trailer and my SS 1LE, but leaves room to grow into an enclosed trailer setup down the road.
