How to casually check who bought your car
I parted ways with a 2018 SS a while back.
Is there a non-creepy and legal way to check up on a formerly owned car and find out roughly where it went to?

Interesting question. I am soon going to part with my 2010 2SS. It seems unlikely that I will sell it privately.
As a veteran of several private sales, all fraught with dealing with idiot buyers, and unwilling to let boy racers test drive a 400 hp car, I will probably either trade in or sell to a national online used car dealer (carmax, etc). So, given that, once it's gone, it's gone. Your car is not a human or even a dog. It has no feelings for you, so what does it matter? |

Some states authorize their MVD/DMV to sell registered owners information. Check with your MVD/DMV office. Insurance companies routinely purchase the information and authorized third party registration and title companies contract with the MVD/DMV to access the database.
You would probably have to pay a fee and fill out a form explaining why you want to find out who owns a car that you do not own. This is to prevent a crime from occurring. LE cannot legally access and release the registered owner information to you as that is considered computer fraud by accessing the systems database for non LE purposes. Every time a plate is run, it creates a paper trail in the main frame. I know of agencies that risked losing access to the secured database when it was determined an employee accessed and released registered owner information for non LE purposes. |

I’ve searched a few dozen VIN’s while shopping around, only once did I find the previous owner on here through Google due to them writing their VIN in their signature

That being said, my 2017 1SS was mint, and had only 6K or so miles on it. I had planned on keeping that one forever, but got bored with the auto tranny. I would love to know where it ended up, and with whom, mainly just to inform the new owner that they got a super maintained Camaro. If you cared about your car, it’s a pretty reasonable thought to have.

From a legal perspective, you might be able to look it up through CARFAX for a fee to get registered owner info. You could also Google search the VIN - once cars are up for sale by a dealer, the VIN will typically pop with a link to the lot it's on. |

I had kept the VIN in the mychevy app so I had the 18 1LE and my 23 ZL1 loaded concurrently and I was able to track the 18 after I sold it to webuyanycar (great experience BTW). I got bored of it a month later when it was sitting in a lot some where with low tire psi alerts. But it was interesting.

I pretty sure it’s a privacy issue and no you can’t find out the buyer of your car. When I traded my 2016 2SS for the ZL1 I told the dealership if the buyer had questions concerning my car then they could contact me or go through the salesperson that sold them the car. And what does it matter anyway, you are done with it and moved on to another vehicle.

If I were to sell my car, I'd want to sell it to someone far away so I didn't see it driving around with someone else at the wheel...like an ex you still had feelings for!! lol
