New guy here

Hello everyone, name is Johnny, been lurking for a while and finally wanted to introduce myself to become a part of the community.

I’ve had a deposit on a ZL1 since April 10th and was notified last week that status is at 3400. I was excited but now I’m reading tons of rumors about the last 2 years ZL1 MAY be getting Blackwing bits, possibly the engine, brakes, gen 4 Magride etc.

My question is, don’t they both run LT4’s? What’s the difference between the two engines besides the extra 18hp and 9ft lbs?

I suppose it will come down to how far the dealer is going to try to bend me over on my current order, otherwise I may roll the dice and wait for the 2023.

Thoughts?

GM being gm I doubt they will give anything from blackwing to the zl1. As for the lt4.. yes both have lt4s but I believe the blackwing tune is a bit different and perhaps the supercharger snout and the intake is different. These mayyyyy make it to the zl1 but I wouldnt hold my breath, lol, as for mag ride 4.0 or whatever I'd say there is probably a 0.1% chance of that coming over, lol.

All the articles I've been reading are based on a MotorTrend post, supposedly from a source deep within GM, but who knows.

I guess we shall see.

Thanks for the reply. I hope to learn lots more here about this platform.

Johnny, I would just go ahead and get the ZL1 you have on order and enjoy it. If the Blackwing pieces make it to the ZL1 then I’m pretty sure there will be a big price increase over the standard ZL1s and I don’t know if it would be worth the extra money. It’s your choice but if you really want the ZL1 you ordered then my advice is get it.

The 2022 is going to be the same as 2021 unless they do a mid-yea refresh and we see NO evidenece of that.

Good point...

The anticipation is killing me, that's for sure.

I can't wait to report back with the keys in my hand.

If the change would take place, it would be 2023 and 2024.

I wouldn't look into these changes. Who cares if the ZL1 gets an extra 18 BHP, that's like 5 rwhp. The next gen mag ride, eh. The brakes? Not unless you're a hardcore track rat.

Enjoy the car when it gets here since it's going to be killed..... again.

I would just get the car so you can drive the thing instead of waiting around longer, anticipating, but that is just me. like already said if there are changes they will likely be pretty small.

There is always something more shiny 1-3+ years down the line. that is just inevitable. if it isnt a camaro, then something else. imo life is short and unless it is really a biiig change, i am not going to wait around. Plus, there is a chance the chip and other shortages are going to stick around and car prices are going to keep increasing 2023+.

Thoughts?

Just buy what you put money down on. Not worth waiting to see if GM added 18hp to a ZL1.

I'll join the choir here, first of all congratulations and hope you'll get your ZL1 very soon now , secondly +18 crank horsepower and +9 lb-ft of torque are nothing, and the new 4.0 version of MRC will not be an earth shattering difference over 3.0 either.

I read a detailed technical article about this new MRC incarnation, the main improvement is in the type of sensors they use: the new ones are more accurate in low speed, small movement scenarios, thus the algorithm can work with more data leading to less interpolation and/or estimation. This is very likely to translate to absolute zero tangible difference unless the current 3.0 algorithm is junk, which we know not to be the case.

Welcome to the party! I too have a 22 ZL1 on order and am waiting for it to be built. I read this information as well but as others have said..."And so what? Then I found $5?" These are not earth shattering changes to the LT4 and also this might lead them to change to a more restrictive ECU. This could be problematic if you ever desire to modify your car (will be doing this to mine, immediately). The CCB are 'neat' (have them on my Z/28) but the ~6k or more to replace them will suck, eventually. The steel rotors on the current car are super capable (along with the pads) and you really won't be longing for CCB other than if you want 'cool looks.' My opinion, enjoy the car when it arrives!

First off, I want to thank everyone for their replies; much appreciated. After reading the posts, I started to realize what I want and to disregard the "what ifs". So I'm just going to stay the course for now. I tend to over-think things and reading the responses sort of offered a sense of clarity.
At the end of the day, I'm not looking for mind blowing numbers, hell, I'd be happy with true 650 to the wheel.

I've been tracking 2 wheels (Yamaha R6's) for many years but I've decided it's time to transition out of it and get back to a cage. I'll miss it but 4 wheels have always been my first love and it's been calling me back.

I will certainly report back on the order and hopefully I can secure the unit soon.

I will also add the learning curve will be interesting. While I'm not new to motorsports, this will certainly be the highest hp car I would own thus far. I own a 300whp Monte Carlo but the power is coming out of the wrong end. I've also booked track time in a 2019 488 GTB more than a hand full of times but it's not the same as calling it your own.
