This is interesting, got this from SEMA

California Will Start Testing for ECU Tunes During Smog Checks Starting Next Week If your car isn't running the factory software or a tune approved by the California Air Resources Board, you'll fail the test. when did they sneak this in?

In NJ they are installing Camera's in the floor of the inspection stations and will soon start the Cat location software that shows an overlay of the factory exhaust. So soon they will all connect. Sad

I remember as a kid they had inspections & it got too wasteful so they axed it.

Every state should have a constitution that demands fiscal responsibility like FL & a lot of this crap would go away.

It would be interesting to know how they verify the tune. Are they actually comparing the tune to a copy of the factory tune or just comparing a time and date stamp or checksum or something else? Seems like a daunting task either way.

They do a great job of making things as complicated as possible for everyone.

I don’t mind state inspections.(the portion where they verify your car is safe for the road). Too many people who neglect to take care of actual safety issues on their cars cause accidents when something fails on their car that should have been replaced that then causes backups on the highway while we are trying to get home from work.

That’s how it has gotten to where it’s at.

People don’t think slippery slopes be like they is, but it do.

I guess but I’d rather not get hit by someone’s car because they neglected to change their bald tires than being allowed to remove my cats for 10 more horsepower. Most people who own cars don’t even have the slightest idea on how to take care of them aside from knowing it’s time for an oil change.

I prefer not worrying about it & not having an intrusive government.

idaho and nevada inspect but not for car defects, it's all about smog. utah inspects for deficiencies but not sure on smog. most states are about pollution than safety deficiencies.

the interesting thing is:
idaho was only testing in ada county(boise). a good chunk of the people that work in boise commute from canyon county which did not test for many years. they were driving most of the traffic on the main interstate each day. makes no sense.

utah we had a vehicle there that we knew wasn't going to pass. $20 extra at a small shop in tooele and I had a "passed test". I was in there with 5 others getting the same thing done. makes no sense.

nevada I have to get the 'maro done next year as new cars are exempt first year. our '14 sonata has to be done yearly. our '99 f250 super duty with 190k on the clock can be registered as a street rod based on age and no more emissions test. makes no sense.

So if someone's rusted out bumper falls off in front of you, and ****s up the front of your car, you're 'not worrying about it?'

Amazing.
