Geez, I can’t believe this question was asked! Just turn the damn knob to “OFF” or don’t buy a car with Automatic Headlamps...SNH!

Some people are actual adults that can think for themselves without a nanny standing over top of them.

Agree been driving 45 years now. I like the flexibility of a manual control. I’m not so senile that I forget to turn on my lights when it’s dark. And I like having the ability to control the lamps period. You keep letting the manufacturers and/or government set your controls and soon you’ll have a set accelerator.

Wanting to conserve expensive HID bulbs when parking the car in one's garage sounds like a perfectly valid use case for turning off automatic lighting to me. As an option, of course.

The problem with automatic headlight systems is they don't address the real safety issue, which is the idiots who drive in fog, rain, dusk and other low visibility conditions w/o turning on their lights. Silver cars in foggy/cloudy conditions running dark are effectively invisible.
At least my 22 has finally latched the lights to the wipers which frankly should have been done long ago. |

It's safer if headlights are automatic. Have you noticed how many people without automatic headlights drive around with just their DRLs on, not knowing that these are too dim and that their tail lights and side markers are off? Another auto feature I like is headlights going on if wipers are on for a minute, particularly since this is the law in some states and so your car is keeping you legal. |

An option that makes it easier for more people to end up in a situation that they shouldn't be in because they forgot they used that option the day before is a bad design choice.
If you can think for yourself and dont need someone protecting you, then you can think for yourself and set the thing to off after turning the car on every time like an adult. Making that argument that you're an adult so dont need a nanny option and then complaining that you have to flick a switch when this scenario occurs that you need it off after turning the vehicle on is mental gymnastics. If you're so negatively impacted by that action then you almost certainly are going to be in the category of people who forget to flick it back on and drive around without headlights on. The justifications described previously for such an option are just ridiculous. Are there niche reasons where it would be preferred to have the headlights not turn on only to need to be turned off in the dark? Sure. Are they frequent or significant enough to design a feature that anyone can use for that purpose vs the negatives that introduces? no. And I know a specific scenario where I'd enjoy having that option (parked at a star gazing party and leaving during the night - where you would want to drive a bit away from people before turning on bright lights). Still, i dont trust people who find using a button when needed as too much work and just want a persistent setting, to then adjust that setting when needed. In the realm of nanny devices ..this is a weak ..weak one given that you can purposely turn it off as needed. |
