Project Wraith: 1LE 2SS....Mag Ride Z28

(current weight 3646 lbs ... full tank/fluids) 500 WHP target ( Kaizenspeed most likely Spring 2019)
( -94 lbs under stock weight)

3590 lbs (half tank of gas)

Hi all,

This is the very beginning of a project log that requires some preplanning...

I am throwing it on here because I am looking for some info that may come up later and will influence the direction I go in

Since I will be ordering a 1LE... there are still alot of unknowns in terms of what parts will be compatible with this Track Package sub-variant and what weight saving measures will be worthwhile...

here's my initial plan and idea... please feel free to comment if you have any info to share.

Overview

Swiss Army Knife Track/Canyon Carver/DD Camaro…. 1LE 2SS…. Mag-Ride Z28…. whatever the name…. The idea is a car coming close to non-Z07 Corvette GS handling at a great value with $$$ left over to reduce weight and eventually get close to LS7 power... In addition... Chevy parts and lightweight aftermarket speakers and custom seat heaters to bring back comforts of 2SS... Combine the best pieces of the Camaro and aftermarket parts bin to make the ultimate daily driver and weekend track car.

Lighten weight across the board by removing rear seats, replacing stock Recaros with lightweight racing seats. Remove mass in every system possible… stock dual mass clutch, stock exhaust system, stock lug nuts, stock hood, stock drive shaft…..

Goals

-Save $40,000 by ordering a 1LE Camaro SS instead of a 2LT Corvette Grand Sport. (Canadian $$$, and I get a GM Preferred Price from my work... which isnt available for the 'Vette)

-Use $10,000-15,000 to first lighten the car to make it handle even better, add creature comforts like Nav, Seat Heat and lightweight aftermarket speakers ( no bass boxes)... then add naturally aspirated power to give a non-Z07 Grand Sport a run for its money….

-Looking for tuners and builders to consider coming up with a total package… I don't need my car for months on end and would allow it to be a test bed… eg Eibach lower springs for FE4 MRC 1LE’s…. Race Seat brackets and harnesses for the 6th Gen SS….

-Looking for stock weights of any/all components that could be replaced to lighten weight and increase performance.

Currently looking for stock weights of:

1LE OEM Wheels

20x10 20mm offset. ^^28 lbs
20x11 43mm offset. ^^29 lbs

(Vertini/Stance fully forged VS 03's staggered at 19" x 10", 19" x 11" 295/30ZR19 , 305/30ZR19 Pilot Sport 4 S

(weights for my sizes 22.6-23.0 lbs)

-28 lbs unsprung weight

Winter wheel set MRR FS01 19 x 10 ( 285/35R19 & 305/35R19 Sottozero 3 potentially

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Pi...tozero-3_2.htm

( Vancouver winters)

2x Cobra Motorsports Kevlar Seats ( 19 lbs + 11 lbs sliders/ mounts/brackets)

-50 lbs over stock seats ( stock seats each 55 lbs.... -25 lb per front seat)

DriveShaft….. 24-28 lbs (Gforce aluminum drive shaft 17 lbs)
Hood…..
1LE Recaro seats ( they look pretty bulky).....
Rear Seatback Delete Kit( Custom) -16 lbs
Battery ( 40.7 lb)
Stock Lug Nuts (13.2 oz per wheel 5x)
Rear Glass ( possible Optic Armour / Lexan).....
Full Exhaust System ( Tri Y's, collectors, catbacks, NPP mufflers)
Complete OEM SS A8 exhaust front to back with NPP 121.90 lbs
NPP Mufflers with 6" of pipe going in 39.30 lbs
Complete mid section and cats 59 lbs
Exhaust manifolds (pair) 23.60 lbs (11.8 lbs each)
OEM Driveshaft 23 lbs ( shipping weight + packaging)

Stock Primary Cats ...9 lbs each (2)

MBRP Race Series Catback 52 lbs (-28 lbs weight saving from behind stock Primary Cats)
Stock diffuser ( replace with CF if weight savings worthwhile).....

** GT4R Hood?!**

Please add any items you think might be good candidates for replacements and weight savings....

Initial Prospective (warranty-safe) Mod List:
MGW Shifter ( waiting to hear back about Gen 6 Shifter)
I realize the 1LE comes with a short shifter… my concern is OEM uses alot of plastic parts for easy cost effective manufacturing… MGW makes rifle bolts…. So I think I’ll stick with them

Carbon Fibre Driveshaft (aprox -50 lbs of rotating mass) [$1300 b4 install… when M6 version released)
Rotating mass is 3 times harder to accelerate than normal mass… so any weight reduction is can be considered almost 3 times less weight

If the CF Drive shaft doesn't work out... there's an Aluminum one rated to 900 hp for a 7-10 lb ROTATING mass savings...

At first I loved where you were going with this one...

But given the extensive work you wanna do. Why not just order a 1ss? And aftermarket the hell out of it.

Simple answer... GM chassis engineers spent over a year tuning this car on the Nurburgring to stick and carry high corner speeds.... they have created an amazing, complete car. To save money and not encroach on the next Z28.... they didn't add any power or instill any hardcore weight saving measures...All I'm doing is removing weight and adding power to this excellent platform... The ECU and PTMS will adapt to modest increases of power.

Moreover.... I would love to see someone try and replicate this $6500 package for less than 7 grand.... and you can't order the eLSD... and even if you got it... it would require a ton of software and electronic intergration to work.

You can't get a HUD on a 1SS... you could order a new dash and retrofit... but a few ppl have done that on camaros and corvettes and its extensive work.

You can't get the Alcantara wheel and shifter... you could order replacements... but again... more expensive than just getting it.

I think you are underestimating how important the full integration and synergy of the PTMS and the eLSD is to the performance of this car. Raw numbers might be close between a full aftermarket build SS and the 1LE... but tuners don't test their cars for a year on The Green Hell... and the difference will show on your lap times.

Keep in mind... these mods wont all be done at once... the major drivetrain and engine mods wont be happening until I'm getting close to the power train warranty expiring...

This project is more like making your own DD Z28 by starting with a 1LE.

This project is the opposite of buying a ZL1 that weighs between 3890-3960 lbs with all that extra weight in the nose....at a $20,000 premium...

Lots of stuff in there... Here is what stands out to me.

-The AFM delete isn't necessary if you are buying a 1LE, manual transmission does not have AFM.
-For lightweight battery, Odyssey is pretty good. Look into Braille also, they have super lightweight Lithium Ion batteries as well (ML20c is $1600, but 6.1lbs) (I like to convert weight savings into $/pound. $42/pound saved).
-Saving 1.3oz per wheel on lug nuts is a bit, well, academic. It is $169/pound saved.
-Exhaust is definitely a cost effective weight savings
-Wheels could be an opportunity, I don't know that anyone has weighed the current 1LE setup. They claim to be forged, but GM's wheels are usually on the heavy side. Forgelines might allow some weight savings, but this would be quite expensive.

I posted the gorllia lugnut weights... It was a happy 'mistake' that they weighed less than stock (bought for appearance); there are lighter alternatives though... Someone else on the forum bought titanium lugnuts for not much more than what i paid for the gorillas...

Excellent thanks much so far! I'd heard KATECH has an AFM Valley delete since AFM parts are present on M6 ...just electronically deactivated... the gorilla locks was rather academic but since I need those... better to get the nice black matching ones than GM's

Will be interesting to see some stock weights interesting nice more cars are delivered and parts are weighed

Stock diffuser ( replace with CF if weight savings worthwhile).....

Please add any items you think might be good candidates for replacements and weight savings....

I love this! I know exactly where your head is at. Guys are quickly posting about other trims but they don't understand.

I'm so much even leaning towards the v6 1le and putting that thing on a chassis diet. My home tracks are Limerock and New York Safety Track so i think it would be perfect for it.

Have you thought about lighter breaks? The 1le wheels are perfect so i wont suggest lighter wheels.

Good luck!

I came back to add to my last post...

The 1le wheels are perfect but going to 19inch light wheels would go a long way. You would also save weight on a smaller tires too.

I would say your pretty much at the 3500-3600lbs range with what you listed.

yeah.... I hope so... again this will be a long term project... I would love to get some good 19" wheels ... just have to ensure they clear the 6 pistons.... I think I'll prob keep the brake for now... I'm up in Canada so I'll be waiting till spring before I order and I hope the Z28 will be out... which will hopefully mean some lightweight alternatives like diffusers and hoods.... wheels.....seat delete kits ect....

Was looking at Titanium Lugnuts... only a weight saving of about 1.5 pounds... unspring rotating means thats about 4-5 pounds of inertia.... ^^ $160

I think the V6 1LE is kickass! I want a V8 since in a decade they will probably limited to exotics...

My GF wants a V6 Camaro as well... Bright Yellow... perhaps Ill convince here to upgrade to 1LE....lol

Maybe the MR 017's in the same Gunmetal for the sleeper look...

Wonder how small I could go on the stock 1LE rims for winter tires
