Lines/gaps on airbag cover?

Hi all,

So recently, my airbag cover seems to be dissolving and showing some visible lines/gaps (see attached picture). Vertical and horizontal, looks worse in reality than on the picture.

I assume the material is weaker there (as predetermined breaking points in case the airbag deploys), but I looks like it's TOO weak there.

Does anyone else have the same issue? Any ways to fix this without completely replacing the airbag?

I'm sure you can cover the gradually opening seams using an interior (p)leather repair kit, although it may not last if these slits keep opening up further and further.

That said, my other question would be how the plastichrome ring doesn't fly into one's face upon deployment... is it supposed to remain attached? Anyone who had their steering wheel airbag deploy and can advise?

Interestingly, there was a recall for the "Camaro" emblem possibly separating during an airbag deployment. I would bet that the ring is weakened at the points where you can see the airbag perforations. I would assume it is meant to tear there as well, and fixed solidly in place (probably heat staking) everywhere else.

Yeah, seen that before, but that's a different issue which only affected a few cars.

If you cover the seams, you compromise the airbag's ability to deploy.
Not good.
