OP, to answer your question, it's a safety thing. However, one of the first things tuners turn off when they get a hold of your car is the governor. All 5th gen SS cars had a governor of 150 or 155 yet there's plenty of people who have surpassed that. Mine is turned off because my car is tuned. However, I haven't been that fast and highly doubt I ever will be, but it's there if I want it I guess.

For some reason I remember reading but can't find that the top speed of the coupe was 330km/h and that the convertible was 308km/h. I can't find the information now but I do know that I've had my convertible at 250km/h which is slightly more than 155 mph, and it has never been tuned.

Maybe it's a structural thing. At 150 mph and up the forces acting on that convertible top must be pretty strong. Could be the thing would be ripped off at 180 mph. That would not be fun.

If the ZL1 convertible isn't speed limited, then it isn't a structural integrity concern.

I sure wouldn't go over 155 in mine anyway - but then again, I wouldn't do that in a coupe without a roll bar either. I did the silver state open in a C4 with a tech speed of 165, and I hit 165 and that car had additional aero mods. And it was pretty scary up above 150. We had a 6 point roll bar, full safety gear, helmets, harnesses etc. No way in a street car convertible or not.

For anyone who was wondering, after three weeks of waiting, I got an official answer from chevy:

"Thank you for your patience while we researched your specific inquiry. We have discussed this inquiry with our product specialists and they have stated that the difference in the vehicle speeds is in order to assist with protection of the convertible top. Higher speeds may damage or impair the vehicles convertible top."

So if you want to go faster that 155mph in a vert and you removed the governor, put the top down haha.

The canvas top has a speed rating before it starts to unravel.

I took my twin turbo RX7 up to 165 a few times and it was more 'interesting' at that speed, maybe a medium pucker factor.

I've had my Camaro up to 150 once. It felt a bit loose until I switched to track mode (should have been there all along). Once I did that it felt pretty tight, lower pucker factor than the RX7.

My 5th gen ZL1 vert was speed limited to 155 because that's what GM certified the top for. That said, the 5th gen speed record for the Texas mile and/or Arkansas Mile was set by a 2011 SS vert at around 226 mph. Not sure about top differences for the 6th gen, but the post above kind of confirms the reasoning same as 5th gen top.

that GM position on the speed limit makes no sense if the ZL1 convertible doesn't have a limit. It uses the same top!

The ZL1 vert is limited. I was wrong. I looked back at the catalog and when it says ZL1 TOP SPEED, it says 198mph (coupe). I overlooked that in parenthesis it said coupe. It's funny that they didn't put the vert top speed on there, even though we know its 155 because there are videos on youtube showing that. Maybe they're embarrassed haha
