Road and Track head to head: M2 Competition vs 2019 SS 1LE

Really well written article. The 1LE beats the M at a track. They note slower acceleration by the Camaro but it is unclear what mode they ran it (switching it to Track mode without engaging PTM wont offer full power).
Either way, the 1LE is a better track car for $15G less. And for the price of the M one could get a ZL1 with 200hp more. Regardless, the reviewers seem objective and do a nice job describing virtues of both cars. And by the way, the 1le looks like an exotic next to the Bimmer. IMO anyway. And the mag folks like the styling too!

NB other great articles in this particular mag as well on racing subjects.

So happy my front end doesn't look like that. I wouldn't buy these new Camaros. I never thought I'd buy one in the first place and did because the 17s performed and looked good. The aesthetics of the new ones are just awful. Nothing flows off that front end.

I prefer the M2 appearance vs the 2019. :whoknows: It’s subjective. What track did they race at? Lap times?

The torque of the M2 will come on at a super-low RPM, even though the LT1 is around 300 at 1K, the M2 will hit full torque around 1700-2000 and that means every time it upshifts, it is starting with significantly more torque. That's the beauty of modern turbo engines.

And they are both kind of "meh" as far as styling goes. M4 looks much better, M2 looks "acceptable", but not all that interesting or aggressive.

The Camaro shouldn’t be any lower than say 3500-4K RPMs exiting a corner, or after an upshift.....so tq at the RPMs you cited is kind of meaningless in discussion of a lap on a circuit.

In a perfect world, but who can have a completely perfect run? I'm sure there are points where the RPM gets a bit lower.

Palm Springs Thermal Club 1.8 mile config. The Chevy did it in 1:26.6, the Bimmer in 1:28.9 (which is one heck of a gap).

Of note: the mag had a pro driver Alex Gurney test a Z/28 there for them in 2014 and he managed 1:26.1 in 20 degree cooler ambient and on cleaner track apparently.

Another tid bit: the Bimmer had dual clutch auto and wore std Pilot Super Sports. Interesting choice of factory tires given the track focused Competition variant, but likely to protect bragging rights of its bigger M4 brother in official tests. Then again tires are usually easy to swap...

Having said that the article gets a lot of things "right" imo, incl noting how superbly capable stock G3s are on the 1le.

As i said the piece is worth reading. There is also a great article on the owner of Pirelli World Challenge series describing the latter in a context of all other series et al.
Another great read full of very interesting info if one is into sports car racing scene. Cheers!

Seeing that the SS(not 1LE) more or less matches the laptime of an m4(1.6 mile track) not sure what they expected vs the M2

Quick question at getting “full power” said by OP.
How do I engage PTM? I know how to switch to Track. Thank for any replies.

That’s awesome—especially since the m2 is supposed to be nasty.

When in Track, double tap the traction control button and select your mode.
