rear wheel bearing replacement?

Hey guys,

I have a vibration and noise that my car develops at 80 mph and up. It is coming from the right rear corner. I swapped wheels tires to make sure that wasn't the cause. The noise was exactly the same. My money is now on a bad axle or wheel bearing. Has anyone replaced a rear wheel bearing on their 1le? How bad is the job?

Thanks

Ps. Ive taken the car to the dealer and they re balanced my factory wheels and tires. They fail to hear the noise on their drives but I and others who have driven my car can clearly hear the noise develop at 80 mph

Keep pushing. This should be a warranty item.
This car is warrantied for track use, 80mph should still be covered despite their inability to reproduce the noise.
They balanced the wheels to try and fix it, have them throw a bearing on and see if that does it.

If it was a bearing or axle I would think that you'd hear it all the time.

If you go from 80 to 90 does the frequency or pitch of the noise increase?

Any chance it's a loose plastic trim or bumper piece that doesn't start flapping around until you're going fast enough?

Bearings are usually quiet up to a certain speed then become loud enough to hear, as they get worse the noise will come on at a lower speed.

It seems that 40 mph is about where the noise will overcome tire/road noise and a customer will complain.

YMMV

I just had a wheel bearing go out on my RAM. It was a low grumble under 40 mph that changed to a higher pitched steady whine at 60 mph +. It got worse and more noticeable over a couple hundred miles before I was able to get it to the shop.
