Regardless of what mode set for the NPP on mine, it starts at "full bore". And within seconds will then close the valves as needed, if in stealth for example. You hear a small audible click of the valve closing.

Doesn't sound unusual one bit, though. Just a typical mechanical actuation sound.

Perhaps OP should post a clip of this "small bang" or "loud little bang."
A lot of incidental sounds can be picked up in the cabin that you would never hear in other cars.
