Flat towing

Hello, I'm glad to be here. Just took delivery of my new 2016 Nightfall Grey Convertible 2SS.

I have been looking around the forum and reading the owners manual and I've found that GM states that the car was not designed to be towed with 2 or 4 wheels down, (flat towed).

My car is a manual so does anyone have any ideas why it can't be flat towed?

We currently flat tow our Jeep Wrangler and while that's not the same I was hoping to be able to flat tow the SS also.

So, does anything have any ideas why the new Camaro SS can't be flat towed?

thanks,
Turbo8u

Could be any number of reasons: the suspension design, rear diff gearing, staggered wheels (wider rear wheels), or the unit body construction was not designed to have the car pulled.

I'm so glad you posted about this. Next year I was thinking about towing it behind an RV (I know crazy to use a sports car as my toad but if I'm going to look like an old retiree, then at least I'll look cool). Anyway, it does appear that only flatbed towing is possible, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe its because the rear wheels never disconnect from the transmission. If you were to remove the drive shaft it might be possible.

I've heard this for a while now and wondered: what happens if someone is parked in a tow zone? If the wrecker doesn't bring a flatbed, and he tows the car, what would happen to the car? Anything noticeable?

Curious as well. So the if I understand right, the only way to tow my car is with a flatbed? What if it gets towed with those quick hitch tow trucks? From the front or the back, does it make a difference ?

Same way they tow all wheel cars like Evos or STIs. Every tow truck that's not a flat bed has wheel raisers for towing. Basically they put this mechanism on either side of your wheel and they crank it together to raise your tire onto it. The mechanism itself has wheels. See pictures below.

There is a hook in your trunk that screws into a port in the grill (pop out section on passenger side). Attach a cable to that hook and winch up onto a flatbed. Only way I know of to do it.

Would hate to see what an inexperienced tow truck operator will do. I had a car towed once and the idiot hooked under the chassis totally f....ing up my suspension. This was a car that had obvious tow hooks under the front bumper.

I agree with you.....Can they not be towed with a dolly, as above?

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I may have to invest in a flat bed.
