I let the dealer run my credit. Thats just because I was screwing with them though. I got them to agree to a lower price in writing ($40k out the door including TT&L on my lightly optioned 2018 1SS 1LE) with them believing they would make up the loss (thats well below the invoice price the dealer themselves paid for the car) by me financing it through them. I had them thinking I was an idiot only concerned with the monthly payment amount and didnt care about financing at a relatively high interest rate on a 5 year loan. I never agreed to actually finance it through them though and didnt. I did hold them to their $40k offer they had put in writing though.

I paid for my last 3 cars with a personal check and drove away immediately. But I'm a repeat customer at a small dealership.

Prior to that I arranged my financing at my bank and paid with bank check. Never had to fill out a credit application at the dealer.

I wouldn't be too concerned, I have near perfect credit and buy a new car ever 1 to 2 years and they ran my credit even when I paid for my last car with a personal check and it didn't hurt my credit.

No, they are in the wrong for sure. You are bringing your own financing, so he is lying about you needing to fill out a credit app with him. If they cannot agree on accepting the payment from your credit union, personally, I would just kill the deal. You should be able to find another dealer that actually wants to sell a car instead of screw around with you like these morons do.

Shouldn’t be any issue with them running your credit score. But if it bothers you wait the 9 days for the check to clear. Also with electronic transfers etc. 9 days seems a little strange. But you can just wait it out.

Cash the check from your credit union, all in $1 bills and bring the cash to the dealer. That’d be fun and you’ll have a story to tell about Stealerahips!

The dealer is full of applesauce.

Do not give them you SS# if you don't want them running your credit. Simple. Also if they say their bank needs 5 days or X number of days for the check to clear (which is also applesauce)... give them the check, go back in 5 days and get the car.

If you do pay cash, and I do mean cash as in bills in a bag, they need your SS# to record it on an IRS form that they need to send in involving any cash transaction over $10K.

I paid cash for my car. Cash as in dollar bills in a bag... no checks, bank wires, credit checks, or other bs involved. Cash on the barrel head. Done. If the dealer POed me like this... I'd have done with it $1.00s just to mess with them.

It shouldn't be this hard to give people money? But there are a lot of scamming a-hole dealers out there... so...

Some dealers run your credit card to also run other stuff, see if you can get them to separate it all instead.

I've bought many cars over the last 25 years for cash and more than half wanted SS for a credit check. I just gave it to them and didn't worry about it.

It's up to you, but if they run your credit it will be considered a hard credit inquiry. I don't trust dealerships in that regard whatsoever.

Do not need a credit check

There is no need to run a credit check if you are doing your own fincancing through a local credit union. Thats the whole point of doing your own financing. The credit unions will do everything for you. I went through my own credit union and it was super easy. They dont need your credit if you already have financing

That's incorrect.

It's in the best interest for the dealer to have u finance through one of their partnered banks because they get kickbacks from said banks. What they're gonna do is run your credit and see if any of their banks can beat your credit union's rate. If your open to that, fine, otherwise I wouldn't let them pull your credit again.

Dealers would much rather you take a loan from one of their banks over you buying a car cash or bringing your own financing.

I wouldn’t have a problem with them running my credit. That way they know the rate they have to beat to make the deal. Sometimes they can beat the credit union, other times they can’t. The extra pull for an auto loan won’t hurt your credit. Finance guys don’t like it when you pay in cash, as mentioned earlier. If I was paying cash I wouldn’t let them do it.

Is it a certified check? I've paid for cars with certified checks in the past and I have never heard of this.
